[Review] The Veronicas - Lolita

The Veronicas Lolita

Be still my heart. Fav Aussie twin-pop outfit The Veronicas (Jessica & Lisa) are BACK with a new single and it doesn't entirely suck!  Hallelujah!  It's hard to believe that I last saw the girls live back in 2008 when they opened up for Natasha Bedingfield. What a show that was!  After four years, The Veronicas are back in a big way!

Back in 2008, the pint-sized duo packed a pretty powerful punch pre-Natasha, serving up hits from their first two albums, including "4Ever," "Everything I'm Not," "When It All Falls Apart," "Hook Me Up," and more.  Of course, back then the Brisbane-based electro-pop/rock duo were busy promoting the U.S. release of their sophomore album, Hook Me Up, lead by the popular dance-tinged pop single "Untouched," which managed to crack the Top 20, peaking at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Since then, the girls have been doing their thing, both together and separately, coming together yet again for the creation and forthcoming release of their third album, Life On Mars, due later this year via Warner Brothers Records.

First single, "Lolita," borrows it's title from the controversial Vladimir Nabokov novel, which of course spawned the EQUALLY controversial 1962 Stanley Kubrick film of the same name (thanks Prophet for your vast literary knowledge).

As much as I chide generic dance pop music, I have to say that "Lolita" feels exactly like the kind of music The Veronicas should be releasing in 2012.  While there is a bit of generic dubstep that seems to infiltrate all pop songs of late, the production and electro-tinged pop/rock sound feels like a natural progression for the girls, who last released a single back in 2008.  Not only that but lyrically speaking, "Lolita" isn't your average, mundane dance-pop anthem about partying until the sun comes up.  It's halfway intelligent and it's got a super catchy hook to boot:
"I'm your Lolita. La Femme Nikita. When we're together, you'll love me forever. You're my possession, I'm your obsession. Don't tell me never. You'll love me forever."
The song actually reminds me of early t.A.T.u., and I mean that in a complimentary way.  Honestly, the only thing that really annoys me is the BLATANT hijacking of Ellie Goulding's blippy electronic "Lights" intro to at the beginning of the song.  Other than that, "Lolita" is a pretty solid comeback single.

Download "Lolita" now (iTunes Australia) and check out the lyric video BELOW.  Music video coming soon.

ahh, The Veronicas have been my favorite band since I discovered 4Ever, and that song is still my anthem! I'm very curious to see how the rest of Life On Mars sounds -- I'm not too overwhelmed by Lolita, but I'm sure it'll eventually grow.

I saw them open for Natasha Bedingfield too! Wow was that really four years ago? Saw them at a venue in San Francisco, they always put on an amazing show! Saw them twice in concert and they always opened with Untouched and closed with 4Ever and boy was 4Ever a life changing experience when witnessed live!
