Hot Video Alert: Ellie Goulding - Burn

Ellie Goulding | Burn | Music Is My King Size Bed | Halcyon Days

Once again, I am feeling completely out of the pop music loop (although I do have a good excuse this time...I moved to NYC!).  Ellie Goulding is releasing a re-packaged version of Halcyon? Say WHAT? Can't say I'm really surprised, as that's the way major labels are doing it these days with their artists. Rather than let an album sink away into obscurity, throw together a couple of new tracks and some remixes and re-release the album. Hell, it works for me. I'll buy it! That being said, first single "Burn" is FAR from a throw away track. It's an epic electropop masterpiece TOTALLY worthy of being on the album the first time 'round.  "Burn" was produced by Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic, Maroon 5, The Wanted), Greg Kurstin (P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, Lily Allen), and Sean Stuart (the three of whom also wrote the track alongside with Ellie, Noel Zancanella and Tedder's OneRepublic cohort, Brent Kutzle).  Check out the ENLIGHTENING new video BELOW.  "Burn" was directed by Mike Sharpe.

[Hot Video Alert] Ellie Goulding - Explosions

Ellie Goulding Explosions

Ellie Goulding quietly released the video for "Explosions," the beautiful and understated third single off her sophomore release, Halcyon.  Produced and co-written by John Fortis, "Explosions" was one of the clear favorites on the U.S. leg of her Halcyon Days Tour (which I caught last month in Philadelphia) so it's no wonder that for the song's video, Ellie and her camp opted for black & white tour footage.  Despite not having been officially released yet, "Explosions" managed to hit the Top 20 on the UK Singles Chart, thanks to a well placed spot in a television advert.

[Hot Video Alert] Ellie Goulding - 'Anything Could Happen' Live on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

Ellie Goulding
British folktronica superstar Ellie Goulding is in the midst of a full-fledged U.S. promotional tour to support her recently released sophomore album, Halcyon (Cherrytree Records/Interscope Records) released October 9th.  Yesterday (October 10th), Ellie stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to make the U.S. television debut of her STUNNING new single, "Anything Could Happen," followed by an equally mesmerizing performance of the same song on The Today Show, this morning where Matt Lauer awkwardly danced around Goulding's most recent U.S. success story, "Lights," which went on to become the UK songstress' first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite being released a year earlier.  While the performances were pretty uniform, the singer/songwriter took some creative liberties with the song, ad libbing at times just to keep things fresh.  Check out a video of Goulding's performance on Jimmy Fallon BELOW.

[Hot Video Alert] Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen

Ellie Goulding Anything Could Happen

Halcyon, the sophomore album from UK folktronica songstress Ellie Goulding is EASILY one of my most anticipated  albums this year, and watching the absolutely STUNNING video for the album's debut single, "Anything Could Happen" only heightens my level of excitement.  The song was written by Goulding and Jim Eliot (of Kish Mauve) and was first teased earlier this summer with the unveiling of a gorgeous lyric video, made of of hundreds of fan photo submissions.  As beautiful as the "Anything Could Happen" lyric video was, it doesn't hold a candle to the BRILLIANT Floria Sigismondi (the film The Runaways, Katy Perry) directed music video released September 5th on Ellie's VEVO.

Wanna know what song I've been listening to on repeat for the past two days? I'll give you a hint. It's a new song from an artist whose first name is ELLIE.  That's right. Britain's folktronica DARLING (and girlfriend of international DJ extraordinaire Skrillex) is amping up for the release of her sure-to-be EPIC sophomore album, Halcyon which is due October 8th in the UK (Polydor Records) and October 9th in the U.S. via Cherrytree Records/Interscope.  First single, "Anything Could Happen," due August 21st, is absolute perfection in every regard.  Now, excuse me while I crawl into my corner and proceed with the shaking and crying.

[Review] The Veronicas - Lolita

The Veronicas Lolita

Be still my heart. Fav Aussie twin-pop outfit The Veronicas (Jessica & Lisa) are BACK with a new single and it doesn't entirely suck!  Hallelujah!  It's hard to believe that I last saw the girls live back in 2008 when they opened up for Natasha Bedingfield. What a show that was!  After four years, The Veronicas are back in a big way!

[Album Review] Aiden Grimshaw - Misty Eye

Aiden Grimshaw Misty Eye

UK X-Factor singer/songwriter (and major cutie) Aiden Grimshaw has announced the forthcoming release of his second single, "Curtain Call," on August 12th via RCA Records.  Taken from his debut album Misty Eye, "Curtain Call" will serve as the follow up to Aiden's debut single, the flawless drum & bass-sprinkled electropop ballad "Is This Love."  This is the PERFECT song to follow "Is This Love" because it's completely different.  "Curtain Call" shows off Aiden's range, both as a vocalist and as an artist.

Vanessa Carlton To Release "Electronic Dance-Pop Record"

Vanessa Carlton

It would appear that singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton is shifting musical directions on her upcoming fifth studio album.  According to an article last month in The Observer, the student-run daily newspaper for Notre Dame and St. Mary's Colleges, Carlton's as-yet-untitled fifth studio album will be...GET THIS..."an electronic dance-pop record."  SAY WHAT?!

Ones to Watch: Quigley

Quigley

While the name Quigley might be foreign to most of you, fans of American Idol probably recognize the talented 22 year old Minnesotan singer/songwriter by her given name, Casey Carlson.  Carlson appeared on the popular reality competition's eighth season back in 2009, making it through to the Top 36, where she was eliminated.  Now going by the name "Quigley," Carlson has undergone a complete transformation, hooking up with English singer/songwriter/producer Vincent Frank (AKA Frankmusik) and signing to his LA-based record label, KillPop Records.  Quigley's lush debut EP, Pleiades is now available on her official website as a free download.

Ones to Watch in 2012: Aiden Grimshaw

Aiden Grimshaw

Nearly two years after gracing television screens all over the UK as a contestant on The X-Factor: Series 7, Aiden Grimshaw has (finally) unveiled his debut single and it's a wonder to behold.  "Is This Love," due June 3rd via RCA Records, was written by the 20-year old Grimshaw, and serves as the first single off his debut album, Misty Eye, out August 13th in the UK.  Listen to the single BELOW.

At first listen, Aiden appears to be he heading in the right direction, musically speaking, following the lead of other more established "folktronica" artists like Alex Clare and Ellie Goulding.  This song is an exercise of both subtlety and strength, complete with a big, soaring chorus and booming drum & bass beats, utilizing Grimshaw's beautiful falsetto to absolute perfection.  This combination showcases, not only Grimshaw's vulnerability, but his impressive vocal chops as well.  Aiden's vocals rise triumphantly above the sleek, futuristic-sounding production, immediately slaying all those who listen.  What a debut!  Grimshaw's songwriting skills are also worth noting.  Gone, are the days when reality show contestants are thrust into the arms of a team of songwriters.  I love that this latest crop of burgeoning artists are allowed the opportunity to showcase their own skills as storytellers.

Hot Video Alert: Ellie Goulding - Lights (Live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show)

Ellie Goulding Lights

In case ya'll missed it, UK singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show today to perform her hit single, "Lights" live.  The arrangement was a little bit different this time around, featuring an extended orchestral introduction before Goulding finally comes in for the first verse.  Goulding has never sounded better.  I never get tired of hearing this song!

Hot Video Alert: Jessie J - Domino

"Domino" is the latest single by international pop star Jessie J and it's a hot one.  Originally released as the first (and as of yet, only) single off of the re-release of her debut album, Who You Are, "Domino" was co-penned by Jessie alongside Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly, Max Martin and Henry Walter, with production brought to you by Dr. Luke and Cirkut.  With a team like that behind you, how can you not have a hit?  What "Domino" lacks in originality, it more than makes up for in fun factor.  The song is a just what we needed after hearing her depression-inducing yet emotionally stirring last UK single "Who You Are." "Domino" is bubblegum pop at it's finest.  Another thing I like about the song is how well it showcases Jessie J's vocal range.  It's easy for a a voice to get lost in the production of a song, especially an up-tempo dance/pop number like this one.  On  "Domino," Jessie J comes out the gate, chirping her way to Mariah Carey-like vocal heights.  While there are most definitely some vocal effects in play here, there's no doubt in my mind that Jessie J can hit those high notes live.  Despite what haters might say, the girl has talent for miles, and she's only 23!

While "Domino" actually came out back in August (before the November release of "Who You Are") the colorful, sexy and carefree Ray Kay-directed video (see below) only just premiered yesterday so I'm taking some liberties by calling it her "latest" single.  As far as I'm concerned, a video is a pretty major promotional tool and if it's being released now, the label (Island/Lava) still must have plans for"Domino."  Over here in the U.S., Jessie J has been taking baby steps with regards to an American career.  Officially, "Domino" is only her second single here in the States, serving as a follow up to the B.o.B.-assisted "Price Tag" which managed to peak at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart last winter.  While not as successful as it's U.S. predecessor, "Domino" still managed to chart at a respectable #28 on the Hot 100 Chart, not to mention #16 on the Billboard U.S. Pop Songs chart and #39 on the U.S. Adult Pop Songs chart.  While not officially released as a single in her native England, "Domino" peaked at #54 on the Official UK Singles Chart.  Not too shabby. Not too shabby at all.  Check out some sick "Domino" remixes, done up by none other than the Jump Smokers and Hype Jones. Hot indeed.

Since making her debut in the UK with the hit single "Do It Like A Dude" back in 2010, Jessie J has been making waves.  The openly bisexual singer is a BRIT Award-winner and has been announced as one of the judges slash mentors on the UK version of the hit U.S. music reality show The Voice which is set to premiere on BBC One sometime in 2012 where she'll be joined by Tom Jones and The Script frontman Danny O'Donoghue and will.i.am. Jessie's first taste at U.S. success came with the release of Miley Cyrus' "Party In The U.S.A," a song which Jessie J co-wrote with Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly (two of her collaborators on "Domino").  Her debut album, Who You Are, peaked at #2 on the UK charts when it was released last February and to date has spawned four top 10 UK singles ("Do It Like A Dude," "Price Tag," "Nobody's Perfect" and "Who You Are").  While she's certainly had more success in her native UK, Jessie J is just picking up momentum her in the U.S. and it's only a matter of time before she explodes.

Jessie J's U.S. profile received a nice, healthy boost when she earned herself a prestigious 'musical guest' spot on Saturday Night Live back in March and played 'House Band' on the MTV VMA's.  Jessie J. was all set to open for Katy Perry's California Dreams Tour, but was replaced by Music Is My King Size Bed-favorite Ellie Goulding after a foot injury put her out of commission.  No matter.  When Who You Are finally came out here in November, it debuted at an impressive #11.  Well done Ms. J. Well done.  While I'd love to see Jessie release some of her other UK singles Stateside, I think it's a smart move on her label's part to release new material here.  Speaking of new material, Jessie J's rumored third U.S. single is none other than "LaserLight," a David Guetta-produced/Invisible Men-co-penned track that appears on the album's re-release.  As much as it pains me to see her hooking up with David Guetta, he does know a thing or two about making a hit record. Look for a video for "LaserLight" sometime in 2012. Right now,  you can download "Domino" on U.S. iTunes HERE and watch Jessie J perform on 'NBC's New Years Eve with Carson Daly' where she'll be joined by U.S. Voice judges Blake Shelton and Cee-Lo Green, Drake, Tony Bennett and many more.

Hot Video Alert: Jakwob feat.Smiler - Right Beside You

I detest live music videos. They just seem like such a cop out to me. I understand label purse strings are tight but live music videos are just so freakin' boring! Case in point, the official video for UK dubstep DJ/producer Jakwob. His latest single, "Right Beside You" was released on June 20th via Boom Ting Recordings, the video for which features Jakwob and guest rapper, Smiler both in the studio. Not much to look at, really. Thank GOD the song is dope because there's nothing worse than a boring-ass music video and a shitty-ass song.  I wish that vocalist Nicky would have made an appearance in the video.  A female vocalist always adds a certain amount of flair to an otherwise uninteresting clip.

Despite not caring much for the video, I am pleased to see Jakwob getting a nice big spotlight on his work. This talented guy certainly deserves it! Jakwob (AKA James Jacob) first gained notoriety across the music blogosphere with his bootleg remix of Ellie Goulding's already impressive "Starry Eyed." Amassing over 14 million hits on YouTube, Jakwob has also remixed for an impressive array of talent, both across the pond AND here in America, including Kid Sister, Robyn, I Blame Coco, Empire of the Sun, Temper Trap, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Penguin Prison, Audio Bullys, Jessie J and Diplo.

His impressive DJ and production skills no doubt come, at least in part, due to an early interest in music. Originally from the Midlands, UK, Jakwob's passion for music really took off in his teens, first getting into jazz and moving on to death metal and even folk music. Today, his style transcends musical genres, touching on elements of dubstep, electro, "ghetto-tech" (new one for me) and break beat - among others.

Jakwob also brings a sense of excitement to his live sets, mixing in hip-hop, drum and bass, dubstep and much more, playing sold-out gigs at Fabric, Bugged Out, Together, Death Disco and many more. Last summer Jakwob also made the rounds to a number of festivals, including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Bestival, Pukkelpop and in Ibiza at Wonderland with Moda. Having recently completed an American tour, including dates at both SXSW and Beyond Wonderland, Jakwob is just getting started and is looking to take his show on the road once again later this year and right into next.  Check out the lackluster video for "Right Beside You" below, if you like, but definitely download the song. It's a hot one folks. Pick it up on UK iTunes HERE.

In Case You Missed It...Ellie Goulding on Saturday Night Live

As I mentioned at the end of April, UK folktronica darling Ellie Goulding made her Saturday Night Live debut, appearing on the show's 700th episode, hosted by Tina Fey on Saturday May 7th. Goulding looked AND sounded stunning, singing two songs - "Lights" and "Your Song." The album debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at #129 but re-entered the chart after her Saturday Night Live performance, peaking at #72. Over on the Billboard Digital Albums chart, Lights peaked at an impressive #15.  It just goes to show what some good promotion can do for a talented artist.  Thank God for Cherrytree Records. Ellie's definitely in good hands over here.

Goulding, who recently finished a string of sold out U.S. performances, will be back in the States this summer, performing at the 20th Anniversary Lollapalooza festival in Chicago as well as some as yet un-announced additional dates. According to Ellie via Twitter, we might be hearing about the new tour as early as this next week.  If you still haven't gotten your Ellie fill after watching the below SNL performances, check out Ellie on Live! With Regis and Kelly, where she sang "Lights" on May 17th. Speaking of "Lights," it appears that she's releasing a remix EP for the song next week.  Check out iTunes on May 23rd and download the remixes!  And speaking of iTunes, the Ellie Goulding-assisted Tinie Tempah track "Wonderman" is currently this week's iTunes single of the week so download that HERE.

Ellie Goulding is COMING TO AMERICA!  The talented singer/songwriter announced today that she'd be going out across the U.S. and Canada in support of her forthcoming debut album, Lights, out March 8th on Cherrytree/Interscope Records.

Starting out in Austin, TX on March 16th and doing four dates at SXSW, Goulding, her drums and (hopefully) tambourine in tow moves across the continent playing in major markets Washington DC, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, Boulder, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Portland, San Fransisco and San Diego. In addition to her U.S. dates, Goulding will cross the border into Canada twice - once in Toronto and once in Vancouver. The tour comes to a close with a performance at the SOLD OUT Coachella music festival. What a run - and I for one can't freakin' wait to see her here in Boston. Looks like she's excited about her adventure as well.
“I’m really excited to come to America and visit new places and see new countryside,” she says. “I feel ready to introduce my music and see what people think of it there. I’m hoping they’ll like it and be inspired, the way I was when I first heard certain artists. I want to create that excitement you get when you’ve discovered something special and feel happy to have ever come across it in the first place.”
Well, Ellie. I've been talking you up to friends and co-workers alike and potentially have a big group coming to see you on March 23rd. Some are familiar and already big fans, some haven't heard of you before but are open minded. I look forward to reaffirming everything I know about how talented you are AND introducing you to a whole new crop of fans. Bring on the tour!

While this trip to America will be her longest, it won't be her first. Promoting the release of her debut EP, An Introduction To Ellie Goulding (download it HERE) last September, the talented "folktronica" singer performed two critically acclaimed gigs in New York and LA. Back in her native UK, Lights was a tremendous success, debuting in the #1 spot on the UK Album Chart. In addition to a #1 album, Goulding's also notched two Top 5 singles ("Starry Eyed" and "Your Song") and two Top 25 ("Guns & Horses," "The Writer") singles in her belt. What about awards and accolades? Already a BRIT award-winner last year, Goulding is currently nominated for two 2011 BRIT awards for 'British Female Solo Artist' and 'British Breakthrough Act'. Find out if she wins on February 15th! Goulding's sixth UK single "Lights" is due out in early 2011. Check out the stunning video below.

Hot Video Alert: Ellie Goulding - Lights

FINALLY. Ellie Goulding is releasing "Lights" as her next single. The Richard Stannard (AKA Biffco)-produced single has always been one of my favorite tracks off Goulding's Bright Lights re-release and was originally supposed to be the British singer/songwriter's fifth single before the powers that be decided to release "Your Song" instead. The decision certainly seemed to pay off as "Your Song" became Goulding's highest chart debut yet, peaking at #2 on the UK Singles Chart - still - I was holding out hope that "Lights" would see the light of day as a single. Lucky me! We now have the music video and word that the Goulding/Stannard/Ash Howes co-penned track will be the sixth single for Goulding and single number two off of Bright Lights. While there's no official release date yet for "Lights" we can likely expect it sometime soon, given that the video premiered on January 16th.  Speaking on the video, it's definitely Goulding's most mainstream POP video yet.  Nothing crazy, just Goulding dancing around with some strobe lights and other cool  visual FX.   She's got a tambourine, some drums and some sexy outfits.  Not gonna lie but I kinda like it.  Thanks Prophet for the heads up on this video.

As previously mentioned, U.S. fans can expect to see "Lights" appear as the title track on Goulding's forthcoming U.S. debut album when it's released on Cherrytree Records March 8th. In the meantime, check out the video for "Lights" below and download Ellie Goulding's debut U.S. EP, An Introduction To Ellie Goulding on iTunes HERE.
