Ones to Watch in 2011: Wolfette

There's something mesmerizing about English electropop/rock singer Wolfette. I can't quite put my finger on what it is that mesmerizes me, all I know is I like her and I think you will as well. On August 1st, Wolfette releases her new single, "Different Story," in the UK and it's a hard-hitting, 90s retro pop jam filled with punch and attitude, as one would expect from an artist with a fesity name like 'Wolfette.'  Listed among her influences: Garbage, Beck, Blondie, Peaches, Muse, Kasabian, The Kills, MSTRKRFT, The Killers, Prodigy, Goldfrap, Justice, Gwen Stefani, P!nk, and PJ Harvey.  I like where this girl's head is at! She's a total bad-ass rocker chick with electropop sensibilities.  Per the official press release:
"'Different Story' is a throwback to 90’s indie pop. The song details the feelings of hope in a relationship on the verge of break up and showcases Wolfette’s brilliant vocal delivery, as well a knack for writing a catchy atmosphere track. Fusing guitar and synths, Different Story is the perfect track to accompany you through the summer."
Catch the stunning music video for Wolfette's new single, "Different Story" below. I kinda think she looks like a bad-ass version of Natalie Imbruglia, no? Catch Wolfette live July 19th at the O2 Academy 2 in Islington and on August 18th at The Workshop in Hoxton.  While "Different Story" isn't available until August 1st, UK fans can download her previous single "Waiting For The Explosion" on UK iTunes HERE.

French Singer/Songwriter Zaz Looks To Introduce 'Gypsy Jazz' Stateside

Ever since my first (and only) trip to Paris, I've always been attracted to French pop music.  There's just something about how the French lyrics come together with the melody and the instrumentation that just sucks me in, despite my not being able to understand a lick of French.  Speaking of French music, allow me to introduce you to chart topping, diamond and platinum selling French pop/gypsy/jazz singer - Zaz!  Already an accomplished artist in her native country, Zaz is ready to take America by storm with the release of her debut album, Zaz via SonyMusic Independent Network (SIN).

Zaz (AKA Isabelle Geffroy) has one of those voices that instantly hooks you and pulls you in.  While her smokey, husky vocal style might call to mind legendary French singer Édith Piaf, Zaz is ripe for today's music scene and a total original.  After accomplishing so much in France, Zaz is ready to bring her unique sound and hooky, playful songwriting, not to mention her combination of jazz manouche (Gypsy Jazz) and chanson Française (lyric-driven French song) Stateside.

Zaz originally released her self-titled debut in France back in 2010 on Play On Records.  The album was a #1 hit on both the French and Belgian charts and was a top 10 hit in Switzerland and Germany.  Certified Diamond in France and Platinum in Belgium, Switzerland and Poland, Zaz has accumulated quite the international fan following.  Make sure you check out the video for her album's first single, "Je Veux"
below and download her self-titled album on U.S. iTunes HERE, which was released on June 4th.
