Delta Maid Releases 'Nashville-friendly' New Single in July, Tours with The Pierces & Bryan Ferry

Following on the heels of her "country-fried" debut single, "Of My Own," Liverpudlian Delta Blues singer/songwriter Delta Maid is back with a followup (and EQUALLY AMAZING) single called "Spend A Little Time."  The single, due out July 10th on Geffen/Future Records, is a "perky dose of down to earth country" and a worthy follow up to her snappy debut.  The "Nashville friendly, blues inspired" song sees Delta rejecting the advances of a big shot big spender in favor of a man who just wants to spend time with her. Listen to what Delta had to say about the song's origins:
"I wrote this after having a talk with friends about prospective partners, a couple of them were a bit guilty of aspiring to go out with someone rich, powerful or famous. That was the trigger for this song. It was a light hearted way of saying money and status isn't everything, well, to me it isn't anyway."
On May 9th, Delta Maid released her debut album, Outside Looking In, to rave reviews from The Sun, who called Maid "Sexy, young and with a talent for writing songs that cut right to the emotional core," and MOJO, who claimed "Outside Looking In has grooves packed with the weathered kind of emotion L'Oreal can't erase." Listen to "Spend A Little Time" below and tell me what you think.

Singer/Songwriter Delta Maid Covers The Strokes, Releases Debut Single & Album in May

Liverpudlian singer/songwriter Delta Maid may be one of the most interesting artists to emerge from the UK music scene of late. She's a little bit country...she's a little bit bluesy...she's a little bit folksy - she's unique and she's different and I find that refreshing. While most young artists from the UK are focused on electro pop (which I also love) or more urban sounds, Delta Maid is beating to the tune of her own drummer. Delta Maid was introduced at an early age to American Blues legends like Son House, Skip James, Bessie Smith and Robert Johnson, and it's these artists who serve as her inspiration today. Despite the fact that Delta's influences all recorded music during the early and mid part of the twentieth century, Delta's sound is completely fresh and modern. Delta even developed her own way of picking her acoustic guitar! For a great sampling of what Delta Maid is all about, check out her stunningly brilliant (and original) cover of The Strokes' "Under Cover of Darkness" below. Gorgeous.

Delta Maid - Under Cover of Darkness - Strokes Cover by Delta Maid

Delta Maid's debut album, Outside Looking In, is due out May 9th on Geffen/Future Records, preceded by first single, the country-fried hipshaker "Of My Own," due out May 1st. Check out the gorgeous video for "Of My Own" below and witness Delta Maid in all her glory. Vocally she sounds a little bit like Jewel, who's also been bitten by the country bug and has been doing well following that path. I imagine that Delta Maid would do well over here on the country charts, should she decide to release her stuff here in America.

The album was recorded at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool and co-produced by Delta and Chris Taylor, along with Delta's brother featured on lead guitar. The album isn't straight up blues or country. It's a lot more layered than that.  We have rockabilly on title track "Outside Looking In," tenderness and poignancy on "Footprints," gospel bounce on "All I Dreamed," ragtime on "Any Way I Want To" and heartbreak country on "Dance With My Broken Heart," a Hank Williams cover.  Rockabilly, gospel, ragtime, country, blues - Outside Looking In has something for everyone. Make sure you check out Delta on tour this Spring and Summer in the UK and remember that "Of My Own," her first official single, is out May 1st, followed by the album on May 9th. Delta Maid is an artist you surely don't want to miss.

British Blues, Country Singer Delta Maid Releases Debut Single in April, Album Due in May

When I blogged about her before, I was getting my first taste.  Now, a month later I'm completely head over heels in love with this singer/songwriter from England.  Liverpudlian blues and country singer Delta Maid is the epitome of FRESH. Not only is she new to the music scene but she's singing a style of music not too widely known in Britain - the blues. Her debut single, the "country-fried hip shaker" "Of My Own" is due out on April 17th digitally (physically on April 18th) while her debut album, Outside Looking In is expected out in May 2011 through Geffen/Future Records.

Following a UK tour supporting Seth Lakeman, Delta Maid was invited to take part in Take That frontman, Gary Barlow's 40th birthday charity show on January 20th at London's Shepherds Bush Empire. Delta played to an audience of invited guests + 1,200 Gary Barlow/Take That fans who entered a lottery to get their hands on tickets. Profits for the gig went to some of Barlow's favorite charities. What an honor! In addition to this prestigious show, Delta has done shows in the past with the likes of Ray LaMontagne, Ellie Goulding and Martha Wainwright.  I can't wait for this album. From the sound of it, it looks like it's going to be quite a stunning record.
" ‘Outside Looking In’ features the sultry, laidback swing of "‘Running On Empty’" and sunshine shot of ‘"Spend A Little Time"’ while ‘"The Changes Made"’ is an album highlight, a tender acoustic ballad worthy of Dolly Parton, laced intricately with Delta’s pure mountain vocal."
Listen to "The Changes Made" below and download it for FREE on Delta's Facebook page. You can also get a nice taste of the sound we can expect to hear on the debut album by watching these two introductory clips, courtesy of Delta Maid. Definitely one of my most anticipated albums of the year. Check out this little assortment of February tour dates and try and see her live.

Tour Dates:

February 1st/LONDON/Wheelbarrow
February 8th/LONDON/Wheelbarrow
February 11th/LONDON/Barfly (HMV Next Big Thing)

UK Singer/Songwriter Delta Maid does the Delta Blues Justice

Don't judge a book by it's cover. If I showed you a picture of 25 year old Liverpudlian (and Geffen recording artist) Delta Maid and told you she was a Blues artist, I doubt you'd believe me. Well, think again. This young talent from the UK can sing the blues for days, and man does she do it well. A self taught guitarist, Delta became strongly influenced by American roots album from a young age. Album track, "The Changes Made," (Download it free HERE) sounds very much like Jewel. Like Jewel, Delta has a sweet, smooth singing voice, especially when she effortlessly goes into her upper register. Absolutely stunning. Listen to "The Changes Made" below:

Delta Maid - The Changes Made by Delta Maid

Delta's forthcoming album will see a variety of Southern influences from the likes of Patsy Cline, Bessie Smith, Dolly Parton and other American greats, all of whom have a spot in Delta's record collection.  What I find so intriguing about international artists who take on distinctly American genres is where they draw their inspiration from. Seeing that Delta's never been to the Deep South, how does she take this music and make it meaningful to her? This speaks wonders about the universal language that is music. Delta finds parallels between her life in Liverpool and life the deep South, where her genre of music originated. Delta explains:
"There’s something really honest about it. It’'s not convoluted in any way. I feel that’s what Liverpool'’s got in common with delta blues, because there’s a lot of honesty there - we tend to wear our hearts on our sleeves. A lot of the language, believe it or not, is quite similar."
UK fans can pick up Delta's debut EP, Broken Branches (download HERE), which was released this summer. Her debut album, Outside Looking In, is due to be released on March 14th, preceded by lead single "Of My Own" on March 7th. The single, described as a "country fried hip shaker" is only a taste of what we can expect to find on her debut album. Expect a variety of a tempos and styles from sultry, laidback swing to tender acoustic ballads. Kudos to Delta Maid for shedding a spotlight on a genre of music, relatively unknown in the UK. Now, let's hope she comes over across the pond and dazzles American audiences with her talents as well.
