Electro-Gothic-Warrior Karin Park Unveils New 'Restless' Remixes; Single and Album Out May 28th

Karin Park Restless

Last month I was so impressed with the Björk-like sounds of Swedish singer/songwriter Karin Park, that I touted her as a 'One to Watch' this year.  Now as the impending release of her new single, "Restless" draws nearer, I'm still feeling as confident as ever with my decision.  Set for release on May 28th (iTunes UK) through State Of The Eye Recordings, "Resltess" is the first single taken from her upcoming debut album, Highwire Poetry, due the very same day.

The Ting Tings 'Hang It Up' with New Single and Video

After what seemed like an eternity, English pop rock duo The Ting Tings are BACK with a hot new single and an equally hot new music video.  It's been over a year since Jules De Martino (drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, vocals, piano) and Katie White (vocals, guitar, bass drums, bass guitar, and cow bells) dropped the first single off their highly anticipated sophomore album, the Calvin Harris-produced "Hands."  New single "Hang It Up" has the band returning to the more familiar sounds of their 2008 debut album, We Started Nothing and I have to say, I'm only a little bit disappointed.

Why only a little?  While "Hands" didn't exactly ignite the charts back in September of 2010 (it peaked at #29 in the UK) it teased of a decidedly new dance/pop direction for the band, whose sound previously only dabbled in electronica.  Nearly all of The Ting Tings' singles have been remixed for the clubs, hell, "Hands" even went #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart,  but a whole album of Ting Tings infused dance pop? The gay in me was practically salivating onto my keyboard!

Cut to...a year later and nary a peep from the Ting Tings, aside from sporadic updates via Twitter and on Facebook.  Hmmm. Clearly "Hands" didn't do what it needed to do so now here we are a year later and the band has all new material.  I totally get that the Tings (and undoubtedly, their label) are being cautious.  Hello! It's been nearly three years since the band's first album came out. That's a long time! Suffering from the oft dreaded sophomore slump at this stage in their career, with only one album under their belt, could be detrimental (quite possibly, an exaggeration)! "Hang It Up" isn't a bad comeback, in fact it's quite catchy.  Call it "Shut Up and Let Me Go" Part 2, if you will.  It's got Katie's trademark shouty bits PLUS a nice little solo bit for Jules, and plenty of their trademark manic spunk but it's not really too drastically different.  "Hands" was different, "Hang It Up" reverts back to the band's SAFE place, the same place that earned them a spot in a prominent iPod commercial back in April 2008.  All disappointment aside, the song is solid.  For fans who didn't latch onto "Hands," "Hang It Up" picks up nicely where We Started Nothing left off.

Speaking of We Started Nothing - WOW. What a solid pop album.  I've said before that We Started Nothing is honestly an album I can rinse, wash and repeat - over and over again.  Every song is listenable and every beat is danceable.  Upon it's initial release in Europe, We Started Nothing debuted at #1 on the UK Album Charts, spawning two top ten hits, (including the #1 hit single "That's Not My Name") and two top 40 singles ("Great DJ," and "Be The One").  Over in the U.S. the Tings also had a good amount of success, thanks in large part to "Shut Up and Let Me Go" being featured in an Apple iPod commercial (that's where I first heard them!).  When their album was released in July it managed to peak at #78 on the Billboard 200, #7 on the U.S. Heatseekers Albums chart and #8 on the Indie Albums chart.  Only two of the band's singles managed to impact the Billboard Hot 100 ("That's Not My Name - #32, "Shut Up and Let Me Go" - #34) with their 2010 single "Hands" peaking at #1 on the dance charts.  The band's first official single - "Fruit Machine" was released only as a limited 500-copy run and did not chart, while the band's final single "We Walk" peaked at #58.  A pretty impressive start to a promising career.  Let's hope the band picks up momentum as we FINALLY get closer to the release of their follow up effort.

While touring in Europe this past summer, The Ting Tings have been treating crowds to fan favorites as well as new tunes like "Hang It Up."  One of the other new tunes the band has been previewing, "Silence," looks to be the next single and what's more,!?  We have another music video comin right up, at least if the band's most recent Facebook posts are to be believed. On Tuesday the Katie teased via the band's official Facebook page "we will have another song and video out before the end of this month." Chances are it's the complementary video to "Silence," which the band Tweeted about filming back in July.  As for the album (the band's second with Columbia/Sony Music), it was originally slated to come out in the Fall, but looks to be pushed back to January.  While we're waiting, let's have a look at the colorful and fun new video for "Hang It Up,"  filmed in Alicante, Spain and directed by The Ting Tings with Dan Gable.  Check out The Ting Tings U.S. iTunes store HERE.

The Ting Tings Smell Up a New Song and Collaboration, New Album Due in January

You have NO idea how excited I am to hear new material from Jules De Martino and Katie White...AKA The Ting Tings! Their 2008 debut album, We Started Nothing was one of my most listened to albums when it first came out here in the U.S. in June. Nearly EVERY single track on the album was singleworthy (in my book) and 6/10 were actually singles. Fancy that. New single, "Hands," which came out in the UK on October 11th was written by the Tings themselves and mixed by the uber-talented Calvin Harris, debuting at #29 on the UK charts. If you haven't yet caught the Warren Fu-directed video (which premiered on September 5th) check that out HERE. Additionally, look out for an impressive remix package from Wideboys, Ralphi Rosario, Michael Woods and Mixin Marc.

"Hands" is the first single released off of the bands' sophomore effort, which is due out sometime in January 2011. While we're waiting for the new album to drop, check out a new track called "We're Not The Same" and scope out the cool behind-the-scenes footage of The Ting Tings.

Turns out that the video and song are being used in a new promotional campaign for a new Tommy Hilfiger scent called LOUD. To celebrate the new fragrance, you can go and download the full version of "We're Not The Same" HERE. The track was written and produced with the scent in mind.  The perfumers Aurelian Guichard and Yann Vasnier describe LOUD for her as "fragile, explosive and tormented." LOUD is available for both him and her.
This whole campaign seems like BRILLIANT marketing to me, especially for a band that's getting ready to release a new record. Considering the band broke after "Shut Up and Let Me Go" appeared in an Apple commercial, this relationship with Tommy Hilfiger makes sense. According to the press release:
"The music platform for LOUD is what connects youth. It transcends culture, geography and background. Music is the common language they speak. The scents themselves, the bold rock and roll rose and the deep, sensuous patchouli, were created to build over time, like a song that has a great hook. Everything about the project connects to the music elements and the relationship with The Ting Tings truly represents the spirit and energy of LOUD."
In addition to having the band perform at the scent's official launch in Berlin a couple of weeks ago, Tommy.com also unveiled LOUD Radio..."the first digital radio with HD sound dedicated to a fragrance and the spirit of creative collaboration." Um. Amazing! The station plays artsits selected "because their DNA is simiar to Tommy's brand." Sounds like Tommy knows what he's doing here and I like what I smell. Now...bring on the new Ting Tings album please!

The Ting Tings are 'Hands' on with New Single!

Holy Hell! The Ting Tings are FINALLY back and back with a vengeance. Their new single "Hands" doesn't come out until October but you can hear it over on NME.com. It's AMAZING. The Ting Tings' last effort, 2008's We Started Nothing DEFINITELY had an electro-rock influence, but no where NEAR as electro as this new single.  Recorded in Berlin with the rest of their forthcoming new album, Kunst,  "Hands" is an electro-pop stomper that marks a not-new-but-exciting-nonetheless direction for the UK band, whose last album produced two top 10 UK singles, including the #1 single "That's Not My Name."  Talking to NME about the album's recording, drummer Jules De Martino had this to say:
"Our time in Berlin was a fresh start, with no rules again. When you've had an album that's been successful, the danger is you go back in the studio, look back and try and emulate it."

Lead singer Katy White added, "It'd be so lazy and easy to make the same album twice," and I completely agree.  This explains the new sound.  The duo's last album managed to take the #1 spot on the UK album's chart and despite receiving some good exposure in the States with "Shut Up and Let Me Go" (featured in one of those usually buzz-generating Apple commercials), the band's UK chart success wasn't matched on this side of the pond.  Sad story. Their debut album only peaked at #78 on the Billboard 200, which for a new UK artist isn't all that bad.  The Ting Tings saw more success on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play chart where they had three Top 5 singles and with Calvin Harris mixing this new single they're likely to have repeat success on the dance charts.  The single is out October 11th on 12" limited-edition vinyl and digital download.  Download the Retro/Grade remix of "Hands" for free HERE and check out the song below. This is a hot one!

Musical Snippets: Erik Hassle, Blake Lewis, Ting Tings, Katie Melua, Helping Haiti & More

Erik HassleTweet & Get A Free Erik Hassle Remix: You all know by now that I'm a BIG fan of the poofy-haired Swedish singer/songwriter Erik Hassle. Well, his label here in the States, Universal Republic is offering his fans the chance to download the Penguin Prison Remix of debut single "Hurtful." Simply click on the "Post To Twitter" link HERE and get the remix. It's that easy! Hassle's album is due out in the States this Spring. Those lucky peeps in the UK can expect remixes from the incomparable Wideboys, Michael Mind, FattyPhunk and more.

Blake LewisBlake Lewis - Heartbreak On Vinyl - The Remixes: While I'm a little bit behind on this, remixes are now available for American Idol Season 6 Runner Up Blake Lewis. As much as I enjoyed "Sad Song" (and subsequent remixes by Jason Nevins, Craig C. and Pilotpriest) "Heartbreak On Vinyl" has always been one of my favorite tracks from Lewis' second album of the same name. Remixes are available to download on iTunes right now. Giving Lewis the remix treatment this time around, we have Bimbo Jones, Chew Fu and LA Riots. Good stuff right here! You might as well check out the remixes for "Sad Song" HERE.

Ting TingsThe Ting Tings Take SNL By Storm: While I rarely tune in anymore to see Saturday Night Live, I will tune record it if I know an awesome band will be making an appearance. On January 16th, the Ting Tings graced the SNL stage and performed 2 of their hits, "Shut Up & Let Me Go," and "That's Not My Name." Brilliant. Loved seeing them live last year. So good! Can't wait for their new album, which the band is working on right now in Germany. Oh! And congrats to the band for their recent Grammy Nomination for Best New Artist. I was definitely rooting for a Ting Tings win. Watch their SNL performances HERE.

Katie MeluaKatie Melua Announces New 2010 European Tour, New Album Coming Along: Katie Melua's music is definitely more on the mellow end of the spectrum when it comes to my musical tastes. That being said, I respect an artist who not only has a beautiful instrument, but also has the ability to express herself so beautifully through her songwriting. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Melua live last year in a more intimate setting and hope to do so again. Starting this Summer Melua will embark on a massive European Tour that will take her to Denmark, Norway, France, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. For a full list of her European tour dates, check out her WEBSITE. The tour kicks off July 1st in Odense, Denmark. In other Katie Melua-related news, famous electronica producer William Orbit (Madonna) is producing Melua's new album. Orbit confirmed the news via Facebook and has been Tweeting about it as well. Can't wait to hear what they come up with. Should be interesting!

Hot Music News & Snippets: Adam Lambert, Gabriella Cilmi, Grammy Nominations & More

Adam LambertIn the wake of negative press that Adam Lambert's controversial American Music Awards Performance left behind, the talented young singer is now just focusing on the music. Lambert sang his heart out on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (airing December 1st), singing a powerful rendition of the album track, "Whataya Want From Me," which was co-written by singer and P!nkMax Martin. Perfection. This is exactly the kind of performance that Adam needs to be doing going forward. I'm not saying that all of this flack that he's been getting is completely justified, in fact I do agree that there's a certain double standard in play here - but this was just a smart move on the part of Adam and his management. Just Adam, a microphone and his fabulous rock-star voice. No theatrics or spectacle. Hopefully this is the kind of performance we can expect when Adam Lambert joins Barbara Walters, Whoopie Goldberg and the the other ladies of The View on December 10th.

Gabriella CilmiAustralian pop singer Gabriella Cilmi (whom I absolutely love) is readying new material for her follow up to 2008's Lessons To Be Learned. Gabriella has been keeping her fans posted via her official blog and Twitter. According to a recent Tweet, Cilimi's apparently met with her label's A&R reps and new material should be premiering very shortly. Going in a decidedly more sexy direction than her last album, Cilmi worked with Xenomania & Greg Kurstin, Dallas Austin and Danger Mouse (one half of Gnarls Barkley). According to Cilmi, "[the album was] inspired by Donna Summer, Flashdance and 80s disco." This sounds potentially HOT! The album is due out early next year, preceded by the first single and video. "The first single is all about unleashing your inner super-hero and it's a big anthem for women." Brilliant! Can't wait to hear Gabriella's new stuff. I always thought she had an interesting voice.

KelisKelis is one of those rare artists whose entire collection I own. Ever since I took a chance and purchased Kaleidoscope at my local college music shop, I was hooked. Kaleidoscope = brilliant. 2001's Wanderland wasn't so much my cup of tea, but she redeemed herself with 2003's Tasty, known as the album that made Kelis famous here in the U.S. Meanwhile, her 2006 album Kelis Was Here bombed in my book, and on the charts. Not so coincidentally, Kelis Was Here was the first album without her long time collaborators The Neptunes. If this pattern of one brilliant album followed by one not so brilliant album is any indication, her new album is going to be HOT and so far, things are heating up nicely. Newly signed to Will.I.Am Music Group via Interscope/Geffen Kelis will be releasing the David Guetta produced single "Acapella," which has already been getting attention since it premiered online on November 23rd. Entertainment Weekly added "Accapella" to it's Must List in the December 11th issue on newsstands right now. Other collaborators include will.I.Am, Free School, Boyz Noize, Burnze and DJ Ammo.

GrammysYeah, Yeah, I know I'm a bit late here regarding the Grammy Nominations. I can't say I'm too shocked or appalled by any of the results, aside from maybe Whitney Houston snub. When I saw that Whitney wasn't nominated, I assumed that it was because her album wasn't released in time for consideration, but then I read reports that producers rushed the album into release in part to be considered for a Grammy. Other than that, things played out as I expected them to with artists like Beyonce (10 nominations), Taylor Swift (8 nominations), The Black Eyed Peas (6 nominations) and Kanye West (6 nominations). Included amongst this years Album of the Year nominees are Lady Gaga's The Fame as well as albums from Beyonce, Taylor Swift, The Black Eyed Peas and Dave Matthews Band. As for record of the year, we have Beyonce's "Halo," "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas, Kings Of Leon's hit single "Use Somebody," "Poker Face" and Swift's "You Belong With Me." Up for Song of the Year this year we have "Poker Face," "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," "Use Somebody," Maxwell's "Pretty Wings" and "You Belong With Me." Best new artists include the Zac Brown Band, Keri Hilson, The Ting Tings, MGMT and the Silversun Pickups. Check out a full list of nominees at Grammy.com.

The Ting Tings Rock Boston & Some Other Music News

Ting Tings at the Paradise
Got back from the Ting Tings performance at the Paradise in Boston. Amazing show. Of course, it was too short but all in all a BLAST. They performed all 10 songs from their debut album We Started Nothing and did it well. Katie White has quite the set of pipes, and her partner in crime, the scrumptious Jules DeMartino was quite awesome on backing vocals, percussion and everything else he did. Good show!

I've been flaky with my blogging lately. Apologies. I've been listening to tons of new music. Really excited about this new FANTASTIC artist, Dan Black. He just released a single over in the UK called "Alone" (no...not the Heart classic) but my absolute FAVORITE song so far is his take on "Hypnotize" by Notorious B.I.G. It's dope! He's performing at the Camden Crawl in London April 24 & 25th - which coincidentally - is when I'll be in London. I'd love to see him live (or at least pick up his single). Follow him on Twitter @Dan__Black.

Mandy Moore - Amanda Leigh Album Artwork From Mandy Moore's Official Site

Mandy Moore's new website has officially launched, and she's now on Twitter @TheMandyMoore. Her single, "I Can Break Your Heart Any Day Of The Week" is a fun little romp of a tune and her voice sounds better than ever. Pick it up on iTunes today! I can't wait to hear her new album, Amanda Leigh, which comes out in May.

Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You

Album Artwork Courtesy of Coverlandia

Finally tonight (cause it's LATE), ArjanWrites posted the Tommie Sunshine remix to Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You." It's a pretty hot remix. Sunshine typically adds a hot beat to rockier from groups like The Sounds, Fall Out Boy and Gossip. This is definitely a surprise for me. I'm glad the remixes are finally coming out. Her new single is "I Do Not Hookup" and it too is a jam. Check out the Tommie Sunshine remix here.

Long Overdue Update! Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Paradiso Girls & More!

Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted I haven't really been inspired lately to do a post. Apologies. This past week saw the release of Kelly Clarkson's fabulous new album as well as the premiere of Britney's video for her controversial "If U Seek Amy," the third single from her Platinum selling album Circus.

Britney Spears - If U Seek Amy This next week promises to be a good week for music as well...at least for me! Mandy Moore announced via her official(?) Twitter that her new single ("I Could Break Your Heart Any Day Of The Week") (?) and official website would be unveiled on Tuesday. Another thing to get excited about...I'll be attending The Ting Tings sold out show at The Paradise! Cannot WAIT for this!

The Ting Tings Oh...and Chelsea Korka (of Pussycat Dolls Present: Search For The Next Doll) announced via her MySpace blog that we should be expecting to hear the debut of her new Robin Antin (Pussycat Dolls, Girlicious)-produced international pop group, The Paradiso Girls very shortly.

The Paradiso Girls I'll try and post more regularly this week! Check out my latest obsession...will.I.Am featuring The Paradiso Girls - I Got It From My Mama (Remix). It samples Daft Punk's "Around The World," which I think is what stopped this remix from being released officially. It's hot nonetheless.
Amy Winehouse Drops Out Of Coachella
Oh...and Amy Winehouse has since dropped out of Coachella. Sad. I guess it was due to visa issues and not health reasons. Something to be thankful for.

Katharine McPhee Signs a New Record Deal, The Ting Tings Release a New Video, Yada Yada Yada

This post is a bit of a mosh/posh of music bits and bites, so forgive me. And away we go!

Katharine McPhee I just read on Perez that American Idol Season 5 Runner Up, Katharine McPhee just signed a new record deal (RCA dropped her in early 2008)! I've always liked the girl and thought that it should have been her rather than Taylor Hicks - but then again, I always want the female contestants to win over the males.

Billboard announced that she was signed to Verve. Verve! Home to Jazz greats Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Sarah Vaughan, Diana Krall and others. This is good news and means that she's ditching her pop career in favor of something more suitable to her talents. As I've said before, her 2006 self-titled debut wasn't bad...it was just a bad match. There were a couple of decent tracks and the production was top notch (Danja, Babyface, Idol's own Kara DioGuardi) and McPhee showed that she's a multi-faceted singer/songwriter, co-writing 3 of the tracks. I just thought that based on her Idol performances that she was going to put out a more Nora Jones-type of Jazzy/pop album. When she didn't, I was kind of disappointed. Clearly, she and her label, RCA, went more commercial. I'm happy for her! Can't wait to hear what's next from Ms. McPhee!

The Ting Tings
Next bit of buzz...The Ting Tings (whom I'm excited to be seeing in Boston in March!) released a new video for their single "That's Not My Name." Check out the old video, just as good with less goin on.

If you haven't checked out their debut album. We Started Nothing, I highly recommend that you do! It's packed full of solid jams. From "Shut Up & Let Me Go" (made popular by the Apple commercial), to "That's Not My Name," "Fruit Machine," "Be The One," and "Great DJ" (top 10 Billboard dance smash) - it's a fun musical romp!
