Cheeky Girl Band The Dolly Rockers Release Acoustic Version of New RedOne Collaboration

Ever since I discovered the joy that is "Je Suis Une Dolly" by the Dolly Rockers, I've been eagerly anticipating a full length album from this talented electro-pop trio. Well, with the release of an acoustic version of a new song, it looks like we're getting closer to this becoming a reality and I am counting down the minutes until the official release.

The Dolly Rockers exploded onto UK televisions in 2006, competing on The X-Factor and making at as far as the "judges' house" before being cut. While this defeat might have squashed other's dreams, the Dolly Rockers plowed on ahead, managing to land a record deal with EMI Parlophone. Their infectious brand of "wonky pop" or "drunk disco" lead to the runaway success of first single, "Je Suis Une Dolly," aided in part by a cheeky video shot on the London Underground. With all of the buzz surrounding the girls' first single, the label quickly released a follow up, "Gold Digger," which failed to ignite the UK Singles chart, peaking at a paltry #46. Plans for an immediate album release and follow up single were scrapped and the girls went back to the drawing board.

The Dolly Rockers reemerged in the Fall of 2010 with news that they had signed a U.S. record deal with up & coming label/production company, RedWalk Productions - a joint venture between mega-hit producer RedOne and former Epic Records President, Charlie Walk. Since October the girls have been getting busy in the studio, making hits and keeping in touch with fans via Facebook and Twitter. The girls recently launched an E-Newsletter, chronicalling their progress in the studio as well as their latest style tips and maybe a few celebrity crushes. In one of the more recent updates, the girls uploaded an acoustic performance of a new song, "Spin The Bottle," which you can watch below.

What I love about this performance is that it showcases each of the Dolly Rockers' vocal talents. All that's missing is the dance club production that you know RedOne is going to bring to the final, recorded version of the song. As amazing as both previous singles were, they really only showed us how much fun the Dolly Rockers were, never really unveiling too much in the way of talent. If you haven't got the chops, an acoustic performance really does showcase an artist's shortcomings. The Dolly Rockers, evidently, have no shortcomings. Bring on the album girls! U.S. Version of X-Factor to Debut in Fall 2011

AHHH! Exciting news. Entertainment Weekly's Michael Slezak has posted the very first promo for the upcoming U.S. version of X-Factor, the popular UK music reality competition (SLASH American Idol's downfall) that has brought us such great artists as Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Diana Vickers, Dolly Rockers, etc. While the promo (which you can see HERE) is short and sweet, my appetite is officially whetted. What about you? American Idol or X-Factor? Who do you want to joining Simon Cowell as a judge on X-Factor?

Dolly Rockers Announce U.S. Label Deal, Take New York City By Storm

I've been eagerly anticipating news from the Dolly Rockers' camp since August when the girls announced signing a U.S. record deal.  Recently, it was announced that the girls joined up with mega producer RedOne and former president of Epic Records, Charlie Walk in a new venture called with RedWalk Productions (according to the girls' Twitter profile). BRILLIANT news.

As if news could get any better...earlier this month the Dolly's posted a video from a recent week-long New York City excursion where they mixed both business and pleasure AND in typical Dolly Rocker fashion...filmed the whole thing.  While the whole video is indeed very amusing, my FAVORITE bit comes in just over a minute in where we see the girls writing music and singing through some new material.  With Danielle Owen at the the piano and Lucie Kay and Sophie King huddled around - they rip through a beautiful piano ballad of some kind.  Why is this bit my favorite? Well...aside from getting to hear some new material, I'm actually BLOWN away by their vocals.  The harmonies are killer! I'm so impressed.  Sorry girls, but as fun as "Je Suis Une Dolly" and "Gold Digger" were, they didn't showcase your talent.  I was excited for the Dolly Rockers' debut record before but after hearing the pop trio nail those harmonies, my excitement has been taken to a new level.  I've most DEFINITELY been Dolly Rockered.  Check out the video romp through NYC below.

The Dolly Rockers Sign U.S. Record Deal, Begin Work on New Material

AMAZING NEWS! The Dolly Rockers are coming to America (via MuuMuse)! The Dolly Rockers have been one of my guilty pleasures ever since I first heard "Je Suis Une Dolly," their first promotional single released while signed with EMI. Now, after a couple of tweaks to the lineup AND label, the girls are ready to break America with a shiny new record deal.  Check out the video for "Je Suis Une Dolly" below. It's great fun and reminds me that I need to get back to London ASAP!

The original Dolly Rockers (Lucie Kay, Sophie King, Brooke Challinor) got their start on Series 3 of The X-Factor back in 2006, making it through to the "judge's houses" stage, but getting cut before the live shows aired. Despite being cut, the girls experienced a surge in popularity, eventually signing with EMI and releasing a promo single based on Bill Wyman's 1981 "(Si Si) Je Suis Un Rockstar" called "Je Suis Une Dolly." The song was backed by Radio 1's Scott Mills and promoted with a low budget video filmed partially on the London Underground. The girls then released their first official single through Parlophone, the Fraser T Smith-produced "Gold Digger."  While the song got off to a strong start, it eventually petered out, topping out at #46. Disappointing! While a third single ("Boys Will Be Boys") was planned, Lucie Kay ultimately left the group, replaced by Danielle Owen.  The last new music we heard from the girls was a free download of a song called "North vs. South" offered as part of a promotion with KangaROOS. Since then I've had "Je Suis Une Dolly" and "Gold Digger" on constant replay but NOW...something to look forward to!

Yesterday, in a message on the official Dolly Rockers Facebook page, the girls announced some BIG NEWS:
"To our wonderful and patient fans.. We know its been a while since we've told you what's been going on but as you may of guessed there have been a lot of changes in the world of the Dolly Rockers! We can proudly tell you that the official line up is Daniele Owen, Sophie King & Lucie Kay. We can also tell you that we have just signed a new deal in the US and we start working on our debut album in September."
Which label have the Dollys signed with?  Well, if their tweets are to be believed than it looks like  Cherrytree Records...home in the U.S. to all sorts of musical fabulosity including Lady Gaga, Robyn, LaRoux, Natalia Kills and RECENTLY Ellie Goulding (AHHHHH!!!!)  This is VERY exciting indeed!  Looks like they are planning on coming back to the states later this year to "cause some havoc" and I for one can't wait.  I'm also THRILLED with the new lineup.  I really thought that Lucie and Sophie added a certain something something to the group.  While I have yet to hear Danielle sing, she's already winning me over by responding to my Tweets...doesn't take much does it?

Hot Free Download - The Dolly Rockers - North Vs South

The Dolly RockersThe UK girl group consisting of Brooke Challinor, Lucie Kay and Sophie King - otherwise known as The Dolly Rockers - are back with a brand new FREE track. Pairing up with footwear maker KangaROOS back in August, The Dolly Rockers launched a dance competition and style makeover. The girls partnership with the KangaROOS brand continues with the chance to download a new Dolly Rockers track called "North Vs South." How do you get it? Well, sign up and "friend" KangaROOS on BEBO, add the song to your BEBO playlist and get a free download. It's that simple! You can also listen to the track on the girls' MySpace page, as well as their reported second official single, "Boys Will Be Boys." No word on when the new single will debut, but I've been anxiously awaiting new Dolly Rockers' material since I heard "Gold Digger," which managed to peak at #46 on the UK charts.

HOT VIDEO ALERT - Dolly Rockers - Gold Digger

I know I've blogged about this before...but I don't care. I am in love with this jam all over again. I just bought a remix promo on Ebay. It includes the Bimbo Jones mixes, Superbass mixes as well as the radio edit. AWESOME. I'm thrilled.

Loads of New Album & Single Artwork!

Massive album artwork update here. Per usual, most of the artwork came from Coverlandia and Covermania. Enjoy!

Erika Jayne - Pretty Mess As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm looking forward to reviewing the debut album, Pretty Mess, from dance music artist, Erika Jayne. Her album is due out August 11th (this Tuesday) and features her #1 dance hits "Rollercoaster," "Stars" and "Give You Everything." Jayne recorded the album with veteran producers Peter Rafelson and Eric Kupper. Can't wait for this one!

Whitney Houston - Million Dollar BillWow. This song makes me really excited about the new Whitney Houston album. "I Look To You" is absolutely gorgeous but this up-tempo jam, produced by Swizz Beats, is HOT. Whitney looks great in the sleeve artwork as well. Nice to see a return to form for Ms. Houston. "Million Dollar Bill" is supposedly going to be released simultaneously with first single, "I Look To You," most likely to appease multiple formats.

Patrick Wolf - The BachelorPatrick Wolf is quite the performer. I had the good fortune of seeing him open for Amy Winehouse at what used to be Avalon. Such a good show. I enjoyed his last album The Magic Position, and should probably check out some of his new material. This is the album artwork from his most recent album, The Bachelor. Not particularly new, since the album was released in June. The first two singles off of the album are "Hard Times" and "Vulture." Also, of particular interest to me...the title song...it features an appearance from English folk musician Eliza Carthy. I reviewed Carthy's CD, Angels & Cigarettes for the Indiana Daily Student back when I was in college. Oh the joys of receiving free music. Of course, most of the CDs I wanted to review I had to pay for. Oh well!

The Killers - The World We Live InAlso not particularly new is the single artwork for the third UK single from The Killers' last album, Day & Age. The artwork for "The World We Live In" (which was released in May) continues in the tradition set by previous singles, featuring a mosaic portrait of one of the band members...this time of bass guitarist Ronnie Vannucci Jr. First single, "Human" featured keyboardist David Keuning, "Spaceman" featured the hotness that is lead singer Brandon Flowers and "A Dustland Fairytale" features guitarist Mark Stoermer.

Paloma Faith - New YorkThe new artwork for the second Paloma Faith single has been unveiled. Lovely. Just as classy and elegant as the "Stone Cold Sober" artwork, and album artwork for her forthcoming debut Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? - out September 21st. "New York" comes out in the UK on September 13th - the video has already been shot. I haven't heard this song yet but I can't wait! Paloma's album is one of my most anticipated albums of the year and one of my "artists to watch." Additionally, you can expect remixes from Tom Middleton, Cutmore and Starsmith. [EDIT] - I LOVE THIS SONG. The video is stunning as well. Wow. Powerhouse.

Miley Cyrus - Party in the U.S.A."Party In The U.S.A." is the first single off of a new Walmart-exclusive Miley Cyrus EP, The Time Of Our Lives. Apparently it's going to be released in conjunction with the unveiling of Miley's new clothing line. The track was officially released to radio stations on July 29th. I'm not the biggest Miley fan, but she does look more mature in this artwork. She's growing up, alright.

Mika - The Boy Who Knew Too MuchThe new Mika album, entitled The Boy Who Knew Too Much, has me really excited. Not only is Mika super cute, but he's super talented. I hope he supports this new album here in the states. It's due out September 22nd in the U.S. (September 21 in the UK) and is lead by first single "We Are Golden." I still need to buy his first album, Life In Cartoon Motion." The album artwork was designed by Mika's sister, who works under the name DaWack. Good stuff!

Erik Hassle - PiecesThis appears to be new album artwork from Swedish singer Erik Hassle, though I'm not sure what this is...album? Single? I was under the impression that THIS was the album artwork. Can anyone confirm? Perhaps this artwork is for the album's UK debut? Regardless...this looks pretty cool.

Erik Hassle - HurtfulThis was Hassle's first Swedish single, "Hurtful." I love the stencil-like fonts here, as well as the black and white photo with the pink lettering. Simple and clean.

Erik Hassle - Don't Bring Flowers"Don't Bring Flowers" is Erik Hassle's UK debut single and has been described as a "synthy acoustic number." Very cool. I'm looking forward to hearing this album in full! The Swedes really do know how to do pop music right. The official video was filmed in LA and has yet to be released but in the meantime - check out this unofficial video.

Dolores O'Riordan - The Journey"The Journey" is the first single off of the new Dolores O'Riordan album, No Baggage, released on August 24th globally and August 25th in the U.S. Released to U.S. radio on July 13th, the single is expected to be released in Europe on August 10th. I've always loved O'Riordan's vocals - ever since she was a member of The Cranberries. The Morgan Page remix of "Ordinary Day," from O'Riordan's debut solo album is hot so I'm hoping for some new remixes from this album. We shall see I guess. The artwork has O'Riordan looking VERY pop. I love it! What do you think?
The Dolly Rockers - Gold DiggerVoted for by the fans, this is the official artwork for "Gold Digger" by The Dolly Rockers. Due out on August 30th, this group is already one of my summer favorites. I've watched the video probably 1000 times and love the Bimbo Jones remix. First single "Je Suis Une Dolly" is also one of my favorite songs of the summer. The girls are recording their debut album, due out at the end of the year.

Daniel Merriweather - ImpossibleThis is the third single from the new Daniel Merriweather CD, Love & War. "Impossible," due to be released on August 17th is the follow up to his last single "Red." Daniel is looking better than ever here...well...maybe not as hot as he did on the cover for "Red," but still...who am I to complain? I'm still hoping he takes a stab at the U.S. market with this new album. I'd love to see him do a live club show here.

My Weekly Last FM Chart

These are my most listened to artists and songs of the past week - according to Last FM.

Last FM Chart
Most Listened To Artists:

I have fewer than 10 Dolly Rockers tracks and they came in at #1? Quite a feat! I can't wait for their debut album. After a few listens, debut single "Je Suis Une Dolly" finally took hold of me and is fast becoming one of my favorite songs of the summer. I think I like "Gold Digger" more, but alas, it has yet to be released. I whipped out Adele's 19 this past week as I've been down lately. Whatever the reason for my sadness, Adele's voice has a knack for tugging at all the right heart strings. The controversy surrounding Clarkson's most recent single got me listening to her album again. It's really a fun record...I hope she and her label sort out their issues. Brooke Hogan...what a pleasant surprise. Her new album The Redemption is way better than expected and I can't get enough. Feist is always a reliable favorite. Ever since I saw her live last summer, I've been itching to see her again.

Most Listened To Songs:

1. Dolly Rockers - Je Suis Une Dolly (Original Radio Edit)
3. Dolly Rockers - Je Suis Une Dolly (Me & Mrs. Jones Edit)
4. Dolly Rockers - Je Suis Une Dolly (Soul Seekerz Retro Club Radio Edit)
5. Dolly Rockers - Je Suis Une Dolly (Soul Seekerz Club Edit)

I don't particularly care for most of the remixes of the Dolly Rockers' debut single, but at this point - I'll take what I can get. These girls deliver just the sort of cheeky, fun pop music that my summer has been missing! Adele's cover of Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love" gets me weeping every time. It's just so brilliantly sung. I need Adele to do another tour. I'd love to see her live. I'm sure I'll be crying like a baby in the balcony. Perhaps this is a concert I'll have to go to alone.

New Obsession...The Dolly Rockers - Gold Digger!

The Dolly Rockers
Photos via Flickr

I gotta admit, I wasn't sold on these girls when I first heard their first single "Je Suis Une Dolly," in fact it left no impression on me at all! I don't remember it! The name "Dolly Rockers" reminded me of one of those gimmicky pop groups like The Fast Food Rockers. Turns out, I judged too quickly. While their fashion sense could be classified as one part Ginger Spice, two parts street whore...(in a good way)...they definitely bring something fun and interesting to the pop scene.

The Dolly Rockers

The new song by The Dolly Rockers...I can't stop listening to it! I've most definitely been "Dolly Rockered." The girls' label, Parlophone is apparently selling this as their debut single, which I think is a smart move as "Gold Digger" is a hot mess, EMPHASIS on the HOT! Sure, they aren't really the best vocalists...doing quite a bit more shouting than actual singing...but who cares! I'm not looking for filler. I'm looking for good, fluffy electro-pop.

The Dolly Rockers - Gold Digger

The group, consisting of Brooke Challinor, Lucie Kay, and Sophie King, first gained some notoriety when they competed together on Simon Fuller's X-Factor back in 2006. Now signed to a major label, they're working on their first album due out sometime later this year. P.S. - I'm even starting to like "Je Suis Une Dolly" now! Curses! I'm easy. Look out for "Gold Digger" remixes from Bimbo Jones, and Superbass. "Je Suis Une Dolly" was also remixed by the Soul Seekerz. "Gold Digger" is out in the UK on August 30th.

Forthcoming & Recently Released Remixes!

Here are some upcoming remixes that are being serviced to DJs, either digitally or via CD. I'm jealous. I wish I knew how to spin. I'd love to sign up for one of these services. Anyway - these are some of my favs! Can't wait for some of them to surface!
Jordin Sparks - Battlefield: I cannot WAIT for this song to get remixed. I'm thrilled that Bimbo Jones is on the mix. I was hoping for an anthem, not something Bimbo Jones usually delivers. Perhaps some U.S. mixes will surface? What a great track.

Jordin SparksRelease Date: 6/09/2009
Label: RCA/Jive
Tracks:
1. Bimbo Jones Radio Edit
2. Bimbo Jones Club Mix
3. Monk & Prof Mix
4. Monk & Prof Instrumental
5. Radio Edit

Jonas Brothers - Paranoid: I've never really been a Jonas Brothers fan to be honest. It's a bit below my demographic, however I'm willing to give anything remixed by StoneBridge a chance. Last remixes I heard from these boys were the Jason Nevins remixes of "When You Look Me In The Eyes." These sound promising.
Jonas BrothersRelease Date: 6/08/2009
Label: Hollywood Records
Tracks:
1. Stonebridge Edit
2. Stonebridge Club Mix
3. Stonebridge Dub
4. Soul Seekerz Edit
5. Soul Seekerz Club Mix
6. Soul Seekerz Dub
7. Original

Lady Gaga - Paparazzi: I've already heard these puppies and let me tell you - Moto Blanco worked it out (in my opinion). Love, Love, Love! Stuart Price's pop mix is actually a nice alternative to the radio edit. The Yusek mix is interesting as well, though not so good for a dance club. I need to listen to the others. I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that there were mixes for this track already!
Lady GagaRelease Date: 7/6/2009
Label: Interscope
Tracks:
1. Radio Edit
2. Filthy Dukes Mix
3. Stuart Price Mix
4. Yuksek Mix
5. Moto Blanco Edit
6. Demo Remix
7. James Camareta Mix
8. Bonus - Moto Blanco Club Mix
9. Bonus - Moto Blanco Dub

Metro Station - Seventeen Forever: While I most certainly do NOT want to be 17 forever, I'm interested to hear these mixes. Lenny B also did some mixes for the bands first single, "Shake It" which were alright. I'll give these a shot. I wish there was more of a package here. Oh well.

Metro Station
Release Date: TBC
Label: Columbia
Tracks:
1. Lenny B Extended Mix
2. Lenny B Instrumental
3. Original
4. Instrumental

Royksopp feat. Robyn - The Girl & The Robot: I love most any music out of Sweden, and anything with Robyn on vocals. While I still think I prefer the original version of the song to any of the remixes, the Spencer & Hill mixes are quite nice. I need to give the rest of them a good listen.
Royksopp & RobynRelease Date: 5/27/2009
Digital Release Date: 5/27/2009
Tracks:
1. Radio Edit
2. Album Version
3. Spencer & Hill Remix
4. Spencer & Hill Edit
5. Joakim Remix
6. Kris Menace Re Interpretation
Taylor Swift - Teardrops on My Guitar: I absolutely LOVED the Digital Dog, J Stax and Nevins mixes of "Love Story," so when I saw that there was a Cahill mix for Swift's "Teardrops on My Guitar," I nearly died. Of course, I'd rather there be a bunch of mixes - I'll take this one please. Thanks. ;-) P.S. - anyone know how long this "edit" is? Is there a full length mix?

Taylor Swift

Release Date: 6/01/2009
Tracks:
1. Cahill Edit

The Script - Before The Worst: These sexy boys are coming back to Boston soon. They were scheduled to play at the Paradise but the show was cancelled (poor ticket sales?). Last remixes I heard from these guys was "We Cry," with remixes by Bimbo Jones, Ashanti Boyz, Afroganic. I kind of wish "The Man That Can't Be Moved" got some remixes, but beggars can't be choosers. Armand Van Helden (almost) always delivers, so this should be good.

The ScriptRelease Date: 6/15/2009
Tracks:
1. Armand Van Helden Mix
2. Original

Valeriya - Wild: Love this song! Wow. This song AND it's remixes are FIRE! Back when this Russian pop star (who many say is the Russian equivalent to Madonna) released her first UK single - "The Party's Over," it took a while for me to get into it. The remixes were alright, with jams churned out by the Manhattan Clique & Ortega & Gold, the song just wasn't anything special. "Wild" should have been the first single - HANDS DOWN! An impressive remix package includes mixes by Manhattan Clique, Oretega & Gold, Ian Carey and Bimbo Jones. I'll say it again - FIRE!

Valeriya
Release Date: TBC
Format: Digital
Tracks:
1. MHC Remix
2. Bimbo Jones Remix
3. Ian Carey Remix
4. Ortega & Gold Remix
5. Ian Carey Club Mix
6. MHC Dub
7. Bimbo Jones Dub
8. Ortega & Gold Dub

Will Young - Tell Me The Worst: Who's my favorite Pop Idol? Well, it's not Michelle McManus (although I did enjoy the Soul Survivor remix of "Just For You"). Will Young - not only do I have a crush on the guy, but his voice melts souls...in a good way. I bought his last album, I also bought a promo for his single "Grace" off of Ebay. Remixes for "Grace" came to us from Fred Falke and Tom Neville. There were also some great remixes for his first single, "Changes," by Chris Lake & Superbass. The new single features remixes by Fred Falke. Can't wait!

Dolly Rockers - Je Suis Une Dolly: Don't know much about these girls, but I love their look and their video. This song is fun and the Soul Seekerz generally churn out a decent pop/dance remix. I'm game.

Chris Cornell - Long Gone: Chris Cornell remix. Never thought I'd see the day. Well, that's not true - but still a little surprise. I enjoyed the remixes to "Part of Me" by DJ AM, DJ Demarko, Quentin Harris, Steve Aoki, Kleerup and others. Not bad...nice rock edge...sort of Tommie Sunshine-esque. These mixes for "Long Gone" come to us from Digital Dog, which sounds like fun to me!

V.V. Brown - Shark In The Water: While I already own some of these, the promo I got on Ebay wasn't the same one mentioned below. Noticeably and disappointingly absent from my promo were the Wendel Kos Sunlight Mix and the Louis La Roche Dub. Overall, I'm disappointed. I was hoping for something a bit more "housey" but I guess they'll do. Can't wait for her album. It's certainly one of my anticipated summer albums of this year. Girl's got talent for miles.

MSTRKRFT & John Legend - Heartbreaker: I'm sure there will be some mixes of this song...at least I hope so. I love John Legend and I enjoy MSTRKRFT. The combo sounds like a winner to me. I very much enjoyed the remixes I heard of "Ordinary People," and of course the remixes of "Green Light." I have high hopes for this one!

Kevin Rudolph feat. Kid Cudi - Welcome To The World: Kevin Rudolph...is he pop? Is he rock? Is he R&B? Is he hip hop? I don't know anything about this guy! I love him all the same, but I don't know a thing about him. I could always do some research (and perhaps I will) but for right now, it's all about the music. This promo features mixes from RedTop. There are also mixes floating around from Mike Rizzo. I enjoyed the remixes I heard of Rudolph's "Let It Rock," and I of course enjoy Kid Cudi - so I'll give these a listen.
