Hot Video Alert: Fefe Dobson - Can't Breathe

One of my favorite Canadian singer/songwriters, Fefe Dobson, just released her third single from her latest album, Joy, a beautiful power ballad called "Can't Breathe," featuring Aussie Guitar phenom Orianthi. "Can't Breathe" is the follow up to previous singles "Stuttering" (which peaked at #10 on the Canadian Hot 100 and #40 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart) and "Ghost" (peaked at #14 on the Canadian Hot 100).  While not as catchy as Dobson's two more electro-tinged singles, it's a decent ballad and Fefe brings her trademark edgy pop/rock attitude to the vocals (and in the Aaron A-directed video).  "Can't Breathe" debuted at #100 on the Canadian Hot 100. Hot Video Alert: Fefe Dobson - Stuttering

It looks like we're ONE STEP closer to a new Fefe Dobson album...FINALLY! Dobson's third album...err...second album to see the light of day...Joy, will be released in Canada on November 22nd and on November 30th in the States via 21 Music, a division of Island Records. "Stuttering" is the infectious new single from the Canadian singer/songwriter who hasn't sounded THIS pop since...well...since her last single, the Kevin Rudolf-produced "Ghost." But before that, it seemed as if Dobson was going in a less pop, more rock direction but with "Stuttering," all of my concerns are obliterated.

Dobson's debut album had an obvious ROCK edge.  Then came the brilliance that was "Don't Go (Girls and Boys)"...a fun little dance/pop number that was completely different than anything Dobson had released previously. Then came the singles from the never released Sunday Love and it was back to that ROCK sound.  Now we have Joy.  The first two singles...were different...but similar to her old sound.  A little bit pop...a little bit rock.  Don't get me wrong, I do love a good shouty rock & roll number like "Watch Me Move" but once "Ghost" came out I was smitten with Fefe Dobson, electro pop diva.  While "Stuttering" isn't electro pop by any means, it's something different for the 25 year old. Dobson can really wail and she does in her new single. It sounds like something Rihanna or Shontelle might put out right now.  A little bit of pop mixed with a little bit of R&B. How contemporary of Ms. Dobson! Now that she's back on Island Records (after being dropped and then picked back up), here's hoping she gets the promotion she deserves.

The video starts out like your typical "jealous ex" video with Dobson hanging around a sleazy motel, waiting to confront her cheating boyfriend.  But OH NO.  This time...there's a twist.  I won't give it away but you can check it out below.  "Stuttering" is out now on U.S. iTunes. Get it.  Also make sure that you check out Dobson on the CW series Hellcats, November 10th, performing as herself.

Fefe Dobson - New Music - More Music Videos

It's finally here! The video for Fefe Dobson's new electro-smash single "Ghost." Penned by Dobson, Kara DioGuardi and Kevin Rudolf the song is a pretty drastic departure from what she's produced in the past in that it's decidedly a dance single. Dobson's previous singles have all been more pop/rock...a little bit harder and edgier, but pop/rock nonetheless. I think the new sound works and works well at that. Dobson's "ROCKER" edge isn't lost in the synthy production, in fact, it complements her vocals and performance. While I highly doubt her whole album is as experimental, I hope that Dobson will at least consider dabbling in electronica again some time. It suits her well.  According to Dobson via Twitter, the single will be available in the U.S. sometime next week.  Her new album, Joy, is due out on August 17th.

Fefe Dobson Goes ELECTRO with 'Ghost'

I have been a fan of Fefe Dobson since her first album and have been eagerly anticipating new material since...well since her first album I guess. When the release of her second album Sunday Love was ultimately scrapped, she was dropped from her label (Island Records) and then re-signed to her old label...it seems like it's taken forever to get to this point but FINALLY a new album is on the horizon. Called Joy, her official second album is due for release on July 6th. Her current single, the electro/pop/rock jam "Ghost" (co-written by Dobson, Kara DioGuardi and Kevin Rudolf) follows previous singles "I Want You" and "Watch Me Move," both of which were featured a ton of TV and film promos (including American Idol, Vampire Diaries, and Lipstick Jungle). It really sounds like her label is working hard to get this talented Canadian singer/songwriter some much needed exposure.

"Ghost" was supposedly released in May but maybe not in the U.S.? I can't find it on iTunes. It definitely takes Dobson in a more "current" musical direction with the whole electro thing but the song still works with a more pop/rock arrangement as seen HERE during a performance on Good Day Sacramento. Little Dragon - "A New" (Clay Moon Remix): Little Dragon is a band from Sweden that I really need to give another shot. I saw them in concert recently with V.V. Brown opening, but left before the end of the set. This remix is trippy...but in a good way. Check it out HERE. - via Twitter

• Sophie Ellis-Bextor's New Single Failing To Impact Charts: Poor Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Looks like UK radio stations aren't playing Sophie's new SMASH single, "Bittersweet." Pity! It's such a gorgeous song (produced by the incomparable Freemasons). Accompanied by a beautiful video, I'm not sure what the deal is. Hopefully things pick up when the single is physically released on May 3rd. - via Sophierazzi

New Fefe Dobson Album due out May 14th: Well THIS has been a long time coming! Fefe Dobson's long-awaited second album (now called Joy) will be released on May 14th. This will be Dobson's first new album in 7 years (after Sunday Love was scrapped and Dobson was dropped by Island Records). Now RE-SIGNED to Island Records, Joy will be released with help from 21 Music, her manager's label. Check out the video for "I Want You." - via Music Fascination

• Geri Halliwell Back In The Studio: Former Spice Girl and UN Goodwill Ambassador Geri Halliwell is reportedly BACK in the studio and making new music. If this is true, this would be her first album since 2005's chart failure, Passion. The album stalled on the UK charts at 41 while both singles fared a little better with "Ride It" peaking at 4 and "Desire" peaking at 22. It will be interesting to see what direction Halliwell goes with her fourth album. - via Daily Mirror

• Kelis' Production Team Release Flesh Tone Mixtape: There's a new mixtape floating around the internet, courtesy of DJ Replay from FreeSchool, the production team that's been working with Kelis on her forthcoming electro-dance album Flesh Tone. The 25 + minute mixtape features snippets of new material as well as remixes and mashups of past songs including "Milkshake," "Bossy," "Get Along With You" and "Caught Out There." Michelle Branch Explains Album Delay and Talks Timbaland Collaboration: I LOVE Michelle Branch. When I heard that The Wreckers were taking a break while both she and Jessica Harp work on their solo careers, I was excited. Country, typically speaking, isn't my cup of tea. Of course, Branch's solo album is expected to have a country influence but that's fine. I'll deal. The Prophet Blog referred to a blog post (which I cannot find any more) in which Branch explains the internal label turmoil over at Warner Nashville. Branch assures her fans that the label is still VERY supportive of her new material. "There's light at the end of the tunnel" she says. She closes by hinting at a "super exciting" bit of news, which she revealed via Twitter the next day. "Just got home from the studio with Timbaland." Um...hot? • After Split with Epic, Jennifer Lopez Joins Island/Def Jam Family: With Jennifer Lopez already in the midst of promoting her forthcoming 7th studio album, Love? her split with Sony's Epic Records in February came as a bit of a shock. Initial reports were saying that Love? was being scrapped altogether but Lopez maintained that the album was on its way. Now, Lopez herself has confirmed signing with L.A. Reid's Island Def Jam label. With the lackluster chart performance of both "Fresh Out The Oven" and "Louboutins," it will be interesting to see where Def Jam takes Lopez and her new album. - via HitFix

Katy Perry's Sophomore Set will be a "Summer Record": Love her or hate her, Katy Perry is someone to talk about. Katy's follow up to her Grammy-nominated "One of the Boys" is due out this summer and according to Perry at the Kids' Choice Awards - "It's a summer record." Talking about what fans can expect from the album, she says "It's roller-skating! It's 90's! It's Ace of Base! It's Cyndi Lauper." This album sounds potentially VERY hot. Collaborating with the likes of Greg Wells, Guy Sigsworth, Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Rivers Cuomo, this could be one of the most anticipated albums of the summer! - via MTV

Nadine Coyle

Nadine Coyle Signs Label Deal with Geffen Records: According to sources, Girls Aloud's Nadine Coyle has inked a deal with Geffen Records. This is exciting news, as there have been rumors swirling about that Coyle was having difficulty nailing a label deal. Coyle has been had at work making her debut solo album, recording with producers William Orbit, Mike Elizondo , Toby Gad, Guy Chambers, Steve Booker, Desmond Child and Tony Kanal. She's also written material with Lucie Silvas, Kyle Cook (from Matchbox 20) and J Remy. - via Digital Spy

Fefe Dobson Song Chosen as Reality Show Theme

I was excited to read that Fefe Dobson's new single ("I Want You") has been chosen as the theme for a VH1 Reality Show. I've loved this girl since her first album came out...or a couple of months after it came out anyway. I don't quite remember which song first got me hooked on Fefe Dobson - perhaps it was her third single, "Everything," or perhaps it was her debut U.S. single "Take Me Away." By the time her fourth single came out - I was sold. Granted, "Don't Go (Girls and Boys)" was completely different than her other singles in that it was more top-40 friendly. Up-tempo and poppy. I loved her other songs as well, but they weren't as much fun.

After her self titled album came out in 2003/2004, Fefe seemingly dropped off the map. She resurfaced during the writing/recording of her follow up album, Sunday Love, blogging on MySpace...however after a couple of release date shifts, the album was ultimately shelved. So annoying. I personally was hoping for something more along the lines of "Don't Go," but of course the two new singles were not up-tempo pop jams. I liked "Don't Let It Go To Your Head," and "This Is My Life" but I think they were poor single choices. Since I have yet to listen to the album, I don't know if there were any other single-worthy tracks on there...I guess I'll never know.

With a new album, Joy, set to come out in September, Dobson is back on MySpace and now Twitter. Dobson's newish "Watch Me Move" was featured in promos for NBC's now cancelled show Lipstick Jungle, and according to her blog - her newest song "I Want You" has been selected as the theme for a new VH1 show called "Megan Wants A Millionaire", which premieres on August 2nd. This is all very positive. I'm wishing her the best. Hopefully this new album makes it onto store shelves! I'm eagerly anticipating a new full length LP from this sassy/classy girl. Oh...and listen for a Jordin Sparks cover of "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" on Jordin's forth coming album on July 21st. It's not half bad!
