[Hot Video Alert] Rihanna - Diamonds

Rihanna | Diamonds

Back around Thanksgiving I prepared my blog for a bunch of Hot Video Alert posts that would go up BOOM BOOM BOOM but, the craziness of the holiday PLUS the fact that I was about to start a new job in the city, I never got around to it.  So...let's try this again.  First up, Rihanna's STUNNING video for her single "Diamonds," taken from Unapologetic, the Barbadian beauty's seventh studio album.

[Hot Video Alert] Rita Ora - Shina Ya Light

Rita Ora | Shine Ya Light

Released November 5th on Roc Nation/Columbia Records, "Shine Ya Light" is the third single released by English pop/R&B star Rita Ora.  The Emil Nava-directed video sees Rita proudly taking to the streets of her native Kosovo, serving up all sorts of attitude.  While I still don't consider myself a FAN, Rita Ora is definitely growing on me.  For me, her sound lacks originality at the moment.  "Shine Ya Light" in particular sounds a bit too similar to something Barbadian dance/pop queen Rihanna might have put out a couple of years ago but she's definitely got the chops to carve out her own niche.  We'll have to see what happens, I guess.

[Hot Video Alert] Katy Perry - Wide Awake

Katy Perry Wide Awake

Following the success of "Wide Awake," her ninth #1 at Top 40 Radio and her tenth consecutive #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play Chart, I think it's fairly safe to say that pop star Katy Perry's sophomore album, Teenage Dream is a relative success.  The song was co-written by Perry, singer/songwriter Bonnie McKee, Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Henry Walter and produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut.  Featured on the Teenage Dream album special edition/re-release, The Complete Confection, "Wide Awake" is as catchy as anything else Perry's released from this album era, and looking at the team of hitmakers behind her, that shouldn't come as a surprise.

Dan Black Returns with 'RAW' New Single; Hints at Kelis Collaboration

Dan Black

Electro hipsterpop singer/songwriter Dan Black recently unveiled some details about his forthcoming new album, including a planned duet with electroGODDESS Kelis.  While the as-yet-untitled album's first single, "RAW" won't be dropping digitally until July 31st, you can catch a sneak peak of the new track in a recently released video promoting the new Absolut flavor of vodka, Caipiroska.  The video features Black hard at work in his Paris-based studio, putting the finishing touches on his new single.  While there's not much to go on just yet, all signs point to this being another flawless showcase of Dan Black's intelligent pop prowess.

Ones to Watch: Conor Maynard

Conor Maynard
19 year old singer/songwriter Conor Maynard might just be Britain's answer to Justin Bieber.  While I don't think Bieber has to worry about this talented young newbie stealing his thunder, or more specifically pilfering his fans - musically speaking, Maynard fits snugly in that same urban pop genre where "The Biebs" currently reigns supreme.  Personally, I think they are different ENOUGH artists that Maynard should have no trouble breaking through. What do you think?

Cheryl Cole Preps for Release of A Million Lights; Call My Name Out June 10th

Cheryl Cole A Million Lights

I don't know WHAT just came over me, but I started sweating bullets for Cheryl Cole's new album, A Million Lights.  Sure, catchy lead single "Call My Name" has a sexy video, but it's all a bit too generic, isn't it?  I mean I love me some SOLO Calvin Harris but he's turning into the next David Guetta, isn't he?

[Review] Cheryl Cole's 'Call My Name' Hits UK Radio

Cheryl Cole

Hey Americans!  I know most of you (MuuMuse-excluded) didn't stay up till 3:00 AM to catch the UK radio debut of Cheryl (Cole)'s new single, out June 10th, so I've got the rundown for you.  At 8:10 AM UK time, radio stations all over the country premiered "Call My Name," giving fans a tease of what's to come from her third album, A Million Lights, due June 18th through Polydor Records.

From the second you hit "PLAY," you know this is a Calvin Harris joint.  The beats are eerily reminiscent of  Harris' Rihanna collaboration, the international #1 hit "We Found Love," (not to mention his NEW RiRi collab, "Where Have You Been") but "Call My Name" is not a clone. Not by any means. Hey, if you have a formula that works (and Calvin does) why not test it out on different artists, tweaking it here and there as necessary? Ryan Tedder worked it out with both Kelly Clarkson and Beyoncé a number of years ago.  While by no means pop innovators here, Calvin & Cheryl know what the people want this summer and that's booty-shakin' dance-pop gold, which is exactly what they deliver on "Call My Name."  The thumping disco-ball beats are steeped in 90s house glamour from beginning to end, making it awful hard not to shake your groove thang.

Kosovo-Born British Singer/Songwriter Rita Ora Drops Hot Debut U.S. Single & Video

Rita Ora

Hot off the success of her collaboration with DJ Fresh, Kosovo-born British singer/songwriter Rita Ora is ready to make a splash over on this side of the pond, releasing the video for her debut U.S. single "How We Do (Party)."  Produced by hip-hop hit makers The Runners (Keyshia Cole, Chris Brown, Usher), "How We Do (Party)" is the ultimate party song, borrowing lyrics from Notorious B.I.G.'s 1993 single "Party and Bullshit."  Released March 20th on Jay-Z's Roc Nation, "How We Do (Party)" was written by Andre Davidson, Andrew Harr, Bonnie McKee alongside a troop of other talented songwriters.

Hot Video Alert: Katy Perry - Part of Me

Katy Perry Part of Me
Not sure what it's been about the last couple Katy Perry songs, but they took some time to grow on me.  The very same thing happened with Perry's latest smash, "Part Of Me," and I don't know what it is.  Perhaps it's over saturation? Perhaps it's because all of the songs all sound the same (*AHEM* Dr. Luke)? Who knows?! For one reason or another, Perry's music doesn't instantaneously connect with me.  Of course, after being hammered over the head with the songs for months and months, it's only natural that you start to develop an affinity towards it. Perhaps that's why after a few listens, Perry's catchy brand of top 40 pop candy takes hold, bludgeoning me into STAN-DOM. I sure ain't complaining.

"Part Of Me" is the first single to be lifted off of Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, a special re-release of her best selling, Grammy-nominated album.  The song, written by Perry, alongside Bonnie McKee, Lukasz Gottwald (AKA Dr. Luke) and Max Martin, "Part Of Me" was produced by Dr. Luke, Martin and Cirkut and serves as the followup to "The One That Got Away."

Hot Video Alert: Selena Gomez & The Scene - Hit The Lights

Fan Art by mikayla156 via Coverlandia
Well it certainly appears that pint-sized pop princess Selena Gomez has found her pop music niche.  Unfortunately for Gomez, that niche - catchy-but-generic dance/pop - is one that I'm quickly growing tired of.  Case in point, her latest single.  The Dreamlab-produced "Hit The Lights" (released all the way back in October) was co-penned by Leah Haywood, Daniel James (both part of the production team Dreamlab) alongside Tony Nilsson.  Like her last single...and the single before that...and the single before that...and the single before that, "Hit The Lights" is an up-tempo dance/pop number infused with all the personality of a rusty nickel.  Sure, the beats are pumping but it's just another generic dance tune in a long line of generic dance tunes.  While I'm about as interested in hearing Selena Gomez sing a ballad as I am in watching paint dry, I was hoping for something a little different.  Call me crazy!

I guess one can't fault Gomez for trying to keep the momentum up, after releasing four #1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs singles ("Naturally," "A Year Without Rain," "Who Says," and "Love You Like A Love Song") but come on! Diversify!  "Hit The Lights" wasn't even remixed for the clubs (at least not yet) which is a bit surprising.  Maybe Gomez's label, Hollywood Records, requires a song to go at least Top 40 on the Hot 100 Chart before making it into a dance remix? I say this because not one of Gomez's singles has charted in the Top 20, yet all have made it into the Top 40...with the exception f two...her debut single "Falling Down" (#82) and "Hit The Lights" (as yet uncharted).  While the song pretty much flopped in the U.S., it did show itself internationally, peaking at #15 on the Belgian chart, in Slovakia at #33 and in #60 in Canada.  So I guess it's not entirely a failure...just mostly.

"Hit The Lights" is the third single to be lifted off of Selena Gomez & The Scene's ('The Scene' being her band: Greg Garman, Ethan Roberts, Joey Clement, Dane Forrest) third studio album, When The Sun Goes Down, released last summer. The album went on to peak at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the young starlet's highest charting debut to date.  Say what you will about "Hit The Lights," Selena Gomez is a little workhorse with a fierce work ethic so she at least deserves credit for that.  Pulling a Rihanna and releasing an album a year for the past three years, I'm definitely a fan of Ms. Gomez.  I think she just needs to take a little break, pool her creative resources and come up with something fresh and excited, because let's face it...the last thing pop music needs is another generic kiddy club anthem.

Hot Video Alert: Mylène Farmer - Du Temps

I can't believe that the last Mylène Farmer single/video I posted about was 2010's brilliant RedOne-produced "Oui...mais non." Clearly I've dropped the ball with regards to this fabulous French dance/pop diva.  "Du Temps" is the most recent single released by the French Madonna and like all of her recent hits, it's uber catchy, despite my not knowing what the hell she's singing about.

Translated into English, "Du Temps" means "Some Time" and was written by Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat.  Taken from her recent compilation album, 2001.2011, "Du Temps" peaked at #8 on the French Singles Chart, breaking her streak of #1s that started back with "Appelle mon numéro" from her album Point de Suture back in 2008.  Farmer's most recent album, 2010's Bleu Noir featured, of course "Oui...mais non" as well as the title track and a vampy little electropop single called "Lonely Lisa," all of which were #1 hits.

In the video, directed by songwriter Laurent Boutonnat, we see some candid behind the scenes footage of the now 50 year old Farmer looking fabulous and elegant as ever with her flaming orange hair and porcelain skin.  The video also features some choreography done on a wet floor Rihanna "Umbrella" style (without the props), backed by six gorgeous male dancers.  While not nearly as catchy as "Ouis...mais non" or "Lonely Lisa," (both of which you have to listen to/watch IMMEDIATELY) "Du Temps" is a nice effort.  I have to say that while it's great to see her putting out current music, fitting in with the worldwide obsession with electropop, Farmer's music was, at one point, somewhat ahead of it's time in terms of production and style.  The past few releases have all been essentially the same, suggesting that perhaps she's hit some sort of a creative plateau? I don't know - regardless of all of that, Mylène Farmer is pure class and elegance. I can't wait to see what she does next.

Unfortunately, "Du Temps" is only available to download on iTunes in Europe and Canada (HERE) but American fans can download some other albums/singles from her extensive discography on U.S. iTunes HERE. Look out for remixes by Tomer G and Mico C.

Hot Video Alert: Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris - We Found Love

Barbadian pop singer Rihanna has to be one of the hardest-working woman in popular music right now.  The talented singer's most recent single, the Calvin Harris-produced "We Found Love" recently became her ninth #1 Billboard Hot 100 single (eleventh if you count her collaborations with Eminem and T.I.) and the song's album, Talk That Talk became her sixth top ten album, the last three of which were top five hits. Astonishing!

Looking back on her rather extensive discography, Rihanna has released one album every year for the past three years, amassing nine Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles.  Since the beginning of her career back in 2005, Rihanna has made smart business decisions.  After the success of her debut single, the incredibly infectious "Pon De Replay" (which peaked at #2), Rihanna went ahead and released single #2, the BLAH R&B number, "If It's Lovin' That You Want."  When that single failed to reach the top 20, Rihanna got to work on album number 2.  Why empty water from a sinking ship when you can just get a new ship?  Rihanna really knows hot to keep the momentum going. My only concern is that she's going to wear herself out. Girl needs a serious break!

"We Found Love" was both written and produced by Scottish singer/songwriter/producer Calvin Harris, taking Princess RiRi straight to the club.  Rihanna's recent string of hits have hit everywhere on the pop spectrum from dance pop to R&B pop, even straight up R&B and hip-hop. "We Found Love" is the singer's first strictly club single (assuming you don't count her David Guetta collaboration) and I can't get enough of it.  The intro is a little long but once those trademark Calvin Harris beats start bumping, that's when the real party really starts.  As exciting as it must be for Rihanna to have her ninth #1 single, "We Found Love" becomes Calvin Harris' first #1 single in America. Amazing! Two birds, one stone.

Check out the Melina Matsoukas-directed video clip below and prepare to get dizzy.  As fun and up-tempo as the song is, the video paints an entirely different picture.  The video includes drug addiction, an abusive relationship (verbal more so than physical)...it's fast moving and dark, which is in serious contrast to the dance party like feel of the song.  Whenever I hear the song at a party, I prefer to block out the rough imagery of the video and just get lost in the music, but kudos to Rihanna for tackling such difficult subject matter.  Look for remixes by Chuckie, Cahill, and R3hab, all available on U.S. iTunes HERE.  New single, the Dr. Luke, Cirkut-produced "You Da One" is already climbing the charts, most recently arriving at #14. Looks like RiRi has another top ten single on her hands folks!

Hot Video Alert: Rihanna - Cheers (Drink To That)

I'm all about a good weekend anthem, and Rihanna's "Cheers (Drink To That)" is definitely that.  The song is the sixth single to be lifted from Rihanna's fifth studio album, Loud and was written by Andrew Harr, Jermaine Jackson, Stacey Barthe, Laura Pergolizzi, Corey Gibson, Chris Ivery, Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards, Avril Lavigne and Scott Spock and produced by Harr & Jackson under the name 'The Runners.'  Featuring a heavy sample of Avril Lavigne's 2002 Grammy nominated, Billboard Hot 100 top 5 single "I'm With You," "Cheers (Drink To That)" becomes the third slow tempo single in a row that Rihanna has released.  Since the January release of the clubby, party-friendly "S&M" RiRi has released 3 SEVERELY down-tempo tracks starting with "California King Bed," in May, "Man Down" in July and now with "Cheers (Drink To That)" in August.  While I'm all for the occasional ballad, I think it's probably a better idea to mix things up rather than fire off three club tracks followed by three slow jams.

One can't help but notice that since "S&M," Rihanna hasn't had a single #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and this after having three #1s in a row with "Only Girl (In The World)," "What's My Name" and "S&M."  While "What's My Name" doesn't necessarily have a thumping bass line, it's got Drake which makes it ripe for both the urban club market as well as top 40 radio.  I might be jumping to conclusions here, but I absolutely see a correlation between the tempo and the chart position.  The faster the tempo...the higher the chart position. "California King Bed" nearly didn't make the top 40 while "Man Down" charted one space down from 60 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Rihanna did manage to turn things around with "Cheers (Drink To That)," as the song pulled off a top 10 spot, likely due to the song's pre-weekend shout out.

Check out documentary-style video for "Cheers (Drink To That)" directed by Evan Rogers, below.  The video, which premiered on iTunes and VEVO August 26th features a small cameo by Avril Lavigne herself and appearances from both Cee-Lo Green and Jay-Z.  Download "Cheers" on U.S. iTunes HERE! Cheers to the freakin' weekend!

Hot Video Alert: Rihanna - Man Down

Rihanna premiered her controversial new video earlier this month on VEVO and I'm just now seeing it for the first time. "Man Down," Rihanna's fifth single from Loud, was written by Shama Joseph, Timothy Thomas, Theron Thomas as well as fellow Barbadian singer/songwriter Shontelle Layne. The reggae-tinged single, which was also produced by Shama "Sham" Joseph took it's sweet time growing on me but I have to say that it finally did.

The Anthony Mandler-directed video was shot in Jamaica and tells the story of a girl who's attacked by a man outside a dance club. The video actually begins with the violent act, wherein Rihanna seemingly shoots a man in cold blood. The story then starts at the very beginning, and shows us everything that lead up to this violent murder. I have to hand it to Rihanna and Anthony Mandler (The Killers, Fergie, Jay-Z) for pushing the envelope and talking about such a touchy subject matter. The video sparked criticism from the Parents Television Council, who lashed out at the star for her "cold, calculated execution of murder," disagreeing with the idea that killing a perpetrator is ever a solution.
"If Chris Brown shot a woman in his new video and BET premiered it, the world would stop. Rihanna should not get a pass." {SOURCE}
While I can certainly see where the PTC is coming from, I am all for an artist expressing themselves through their art. Rihanna responded in defense of the video, making the argument that it should be the parent's job to shield their children from such violent imagery.
"I'm a 23 year old singer who doesn't have kids. What's up with everybody wanting me to be a parent [to their children]. I'm just a girl, I can only be our voice. We all know it's difficult and embarrassing to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone, especially our parents. The music industry isn't "Parent's 'R Us." We have the freedom to make art, let us! It's your job to make sure your children don't turn out like us. You can't hide your kids from society, or they'll never learn how to adapt. This is the real world!"{SOURCE}
Anthony Mandler himself chimed in in response to the PTC's complaint, saying:
"It's (the video) doing exactly what Rihanna and I hoped it would do, which is shine a light on the very dark subject matter... This medium used to be a great medium of messages... I grew up in an era of Madonna releasing videos and sparking controversy. I think most people are wasting this medium... The fact that there's an argument to ban this because this will make girls retaliate from abuse with murder is skipping over the point. We obviously have a huge issue to deal with as a country."{SOURCE}
Download "Man Down," off Rihanna's latest album Loud on U.S. iTunes HERE.

Adele Tops UK Singles & Albums Chart, Earns First #1 Single

Adele overload! Wow GIRRRRL! You go! UK singer/songwriter Adele earns her first #1 single this week with "Someone Like You," which quickly rose to the top following an ABSOLUTELY spellbinding performance at the 2011 BRIT Awards. Co-penned by Adele and Dan Wilson, the heartfelt ballad sits atop the chart for the second week in a row, right above Jessie J's "Price Tag" which is sitting pretty in the #2 spot. Rihanna's "S&M" climbs 3 spots into #3, topping Adele's debut single "Rolling In The Deep," which remains in the 4th position, giving Adele 4 singles in the Top 100 this week (along with "Make You Feel My Love" and "Chasing Pavements"). Making it's debut this week, the infectious pop/dance smash "Good Girl" by U.S. singer Alexis Jordan. "Good Girl" is the follow up to "Happiness," which peaked at #3 when it was released last October. Not a bad showing for a second single, eh? I'm still hoping for a U.S. release! In other chart news, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" dips down 5 spots to #8 this week. Looks like the UK isn't as in love with "Born This Way" as the rest of the world is? I can't say I'm too shocked.

Other new entries this week include the Gwyneth Paltrow/Matthew Morrison Rihanna cover from Glee (#22) and Clare Maguire's second single, "The Last Dance" (#23). Gwyneth also makes an appearence at #31 with her Cee-Lo Green "Forget You" cover (also from Glee).  We'll have to see if next week's new releases unseat any of our Top Ten.  On the schedule we have new tunes from Chipmunk featuring Keri Hilson, James Blake, X-Factor contestant Mary Byrne, McFly, Natalia Kills, Olly Murs, Plan B, Tinie Tempah featuring Ellie Goulding and Willow Smith, just to name a few.  Should be interesting...

Official UK Singles Top 10//March 5, 2011

1. Adele//Someone Like You
2. Jessie J feat. B.o.B.//Price Tag
3. Rihanna//S&M
4. Adele//Rolling In The Deep
5. Chipmunk feat. Chris Brown//Champion
6. Alexis Jordan//Good Girl
7. Bruno Mars//Grenade
8. Lady Gaga//Born This Way
9. Chris Brown//Yeah 3X
10. P!nk//F*kin' Perfect

[SEE THE FULL TOP 100 HERE]

Adele's good fortune continues on the Official Album Chart front as well as 21 spends yet another week at #1. That's 5 weeks now. Impressive to say the least! Not only that but Adele's album, which came out in America last week, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Way to go lady! Her debut, 19 (which sits in the #2 spot this week on the UK Albums Chart) peaked at #10 here in the States so this is pretty epic. The Glee Cast make a strong debut at #4 with Volume 4 of their popular compilation albums. The rest of the Top Ten just doesn't interest me so I won't waste your time. Check out the link below to see the whole 100. Other new entries this week include Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX's new collaboration album We're New Here (#33) as well as...well. That's all I got for you.  Look out for new albums next week from Avril Lavigne, Kanye West, Noah & The Whale, Lupe Fiasco, Marianne Faithfull, Pet Shop Boys and Slash.  I hate to see it but I honestly don't see any of these guys dethroning Adele but who knows. Stranger things have happened.

Hot Video Alert: Rihanna - S&M

Barbadian super diva Rihanna premiered the video for her latest single, "S&M" last night at midnight and, as expected, it's a rip-roarin' raunchy delight. Gags, whips, lots of leather and Perez Hilton on a leash...what more could you ask for in a video for a song called "S&M?" The video was directed by Melina Matsoukas who's done videos for past Rihanna singles including "Hard", "Rude Boy" and "Rockstar 101." Bright colors, fierce wigs and sexy costumes - the video is a visual stimulant - pure & simple.

"S&M" is the fourth single taken from Rihanna's fifth album, the Platinum-selling Loud. The song was produced by Stargate and Sandy Vee and written by Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Sandy Wilhelm and Ester Dean. Sent to mainstream and rhythmic radio on January 24th, a special remix package was digitally delivered on January 21st featuring hot mixes from Dave Audé, Joe Bermudez, and Sidney Samson. So far the single has been doing ALRIGHT on the charts, currently sitting at #53 on the Billboard Hot 100, #46 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart and #42 on the official UK Singles chart. The song has done very well in Australia, where it climbed to #3 on the ARIA Singles chart after it's release on January 17th. The remixes are available now on Masterbeat and Loud is in stores now.

Hot Video Alert: David Guetta feat. Rihanna - Who's That Chick?

Check out the newly released video for David Guetta's Rihanna collaboration, "Who's That Chick." This is actually the third video shot for the song, the first was used to promote Doritos' global music event 'Late Night.' The most recent video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund (who's currently working on the new HIAM video for Britney Spears), the cartoonishly colorful video features David Guetta DJing on a space ship while Rihanna dances on a funky, space disco somewhere amongst the stars. While the portion of the video featuring Guetta is new, the footage of Rihanna comes from the original Doritos' footage.

"Who's That Chick" was originally released on November 22nd. It peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at #51 and at #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. The song is currently at #37 on the Top 40 airplay charts and climbing fast. "Who's That Chick" fared better in the UK where it managed to peak at #6 on the UK Singles chart and went all the way to the top of the UK Dance chart. "Who's That Chick" is the latest single from Guetta, who's 2009 album, One Love spawned such hits as "When Love Takes Over," "Sexy Bitch," "Gettin' Over You" and "Memories." A re-issue of the album, One More Love is available now featuring 8 of Guetta's biggest hits including "Who's That Chick." What's more, Guetta has paired up with YouTube lip-syncing sensation Keenan Cahill on a video megamix. Check that out HERE.

David Guetta will be attending the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on February 13th to see if he wins 'Best Remixed Recording' for his mix of Madonna's "Revolver." Winning this year would make Guetta a 2-time Grammy winner, following last years win in the same category. Currnently, Guetta is hard at work on his next record, due out sometime in 2011. Expect him to preview some new tunes when he appears at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami on March 27th.

FREE DOWNLOAD ALERT: Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World)

"Only Girl (In The World)," the first single off of Barbadian singer Rihanna's fifth studio album may have come out back in September but it's still one of my most played tracks in the last six months. Produced by Stargate and Sandy Vee, "Only Girl (In The World)" topped the charts in a multitude of countries including the coveted #1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100. The single was backed by a bevvy of remixes from the likes of Bimbo Jones, Mixin' Marc & Tony Svejda, Rosabel, and CCW and a stunning video directed by Anthony Mandler (SEE IT BELOW).

If you don't have it already, what are you waiting for? In any event - MySpace and Kodak are giving the track away for free until February 21st so download it now HERE. You can also check out exclusive live performance videos. Go get it!
